I'm about to swap the 727 out of my 68 polara and figured while I've got it out I may as well put in a better converter. I dont know much about converters so I'm not sure what I need. Here's the specs; 383, pretty much stock. Headers, intake, and carb. I'll be putting a 727 from a 77 new yorker in. I'm not sure on the rear gear ratio but it's probably stock, I'm guessing 2.90 or 2.73. It's an 8 3/4. What stall point Would I need? The car is just a cruiser. It'll probably never see the track but I'd like at least a little performance.

Also, Any reason a 77 727 from a new yorker would have a problem fitting in my 68? The trans is not rebuilt but it ran great before I pulled it. Any recomendations on what I should change out on the trans while its out?

I am no expert here so I will just toss in a bit of input and let some others who know more about it chime it.

But on my mild 318 I ran with a 2200 TCI stall converter.

Not much over stock but then again I do not have an outrageous combo either so i figured it would be good for the street.

being that yours is pretty stock I would say a 2000-3000 stall would be good for you and be very streetable.

but also you should take into consideration rather or not you plan on doing any future upgrade, if so than you may want to run a higher stall so you are already matched with what you plan on doing with your ride.

as for what to do to it while it is out?......atleast do a trans service on it, new filter, gasket and fluid, new front and rear seals.

you may want to upgrade with a shift kit or a different valve body such as a manual or reverse manual valve body.

make sure your flex plates are the same and that both transmissions have the same bell housing bolt pattern (you did not specify engine size of the donor car I don't think).

measure the overall length of the trans to make sure it doesnt have a different size tail stock on it so you wont run into lengthening or shortening a drive shaft.

make sure your out put shaft is the correct spline count for your drive shaft you will be using.

thats all I can think of off hand....I am sure someone can give you a more in depth opinion though.

GOOD LUCK!

Talk to these guys .http://www.ultimateconverter.com/home.html or these guys http://www.turboaction.com/frame.html and ask them for advice. They'll need to know your combo including the cam you're running and you'll have to nail down your rear end ratio. Just turn the wheel one revolution and count how many times the pinion yoke turns. Divide one into the other.

If I had to guess with your highway gears and probably tame cam no higher than a 2000 stall.
