Tow Rigs

-
The best tow vehicle I ever owned was a 76 power wagon 440/727 4.10 3/4 ton.
The truck was extended cab 8' bed.
Complete horse, I once had two junk jeeps on the trailer and one cut up in the bed of the truck went thru the scales at 16,800 pounds of scrap metal.
But it only got 4 mpg.
When gas hit $1.00 a gallon I traded it off.

Currently for pulling cars, my buddy usually pulls my crap for gas money and lunch.
I sold all my car trailers, because my buddies used mine more than I did.
I do still have a small open 6 x 12' to haul jeeps and lumber.

Nice tow vehicle Hillbilly Mopars69! Here's 2 pics I saved of the same type truck as yours.

YAY the tow rig thread is back ....

i love rollbacks ....that kenworth looks awesome ....looks like a 26' aluminum bed, and prolly the tow boom on the back with wheel lifts

the best thing about rollbacks is the sounds they make

whirrrrrrrr :happy1:

the volvo looks like for buses and big stuff ...wow

Rofl!

Yep the rollback has the wheel lift also, had a dodge sprinter van on it last night.
The Volvo is a big one 45 ton recovery set up and had no problem pulling a 53 foot loaded box back on its wheels.
heres a few others from the fleet
The big kenworth a bit smaller than the Volvo and a small wheel lift Ford and the Boss's race car hauler.

Since I only tow to the track on weekends, and needed an economical "service" truck for my business, I got a Toyota PU.
The truck is an 86 Toyota 1ton, 4cyl, 5 spd, which I bought new. Trailer is homeade , that I bought in 1976. The truck weighs 3440 lbs empty, and gets about 25 mpg. When loaded with my 66 Barracuda, to go racing, with tools and parts, it weighs between 9,500 & 10,000lbs, and gets between 18-19 mpg. I make race trips, from Florida to Tennesee, Virginia, Maryland. I probably tow about 5,000 miles per year. Truck now has 376,000 miles on the clock, with only timing chain replacement, on the engine.

this is my truck and trailer towing my buddies 65 chevelle

Heres mine, 98 Dakota 3.9 v6, the trailer is a 1968 Homebuilt. Just need to find a late 60 Dodge pickup to make the trio complete. Towed my 73 Chevelle stock car with this setup, getting going wasn't bad, stopping was another story, coming home from races one night, pulled off of the interstate to get a bite to eat, came to a stop light(couldn't have been doing over 30)stoplight turned red, and the trailer and racecar pushed me through the stoplight, luckily it was 2am so there was no traffic. Trailer has been relagated to backroads at slower speeds, and short hauls.

My last diesel. 92 D350, 5 spd, 3.54s, 16 mpg towing, 19-20 mpg empty, and a whole lot of ugly.

I can beat that ugly truck! :D

My 1972 D-300 ramp truck. Got it off Craig's last summer, traded 1-1/2 motorcycles for it -

DerPig009.jpg

Originally equipped with a 400, advertised having a 440, actually powered by a 1964-vintage 413 (wouldn't be my first choice either, but that's what's in it) with a fairly lumpy cam.:dontknow:, SM465 tranny, and (my favorite), 4-wheel drum brakes, making every stop a panic stop!

Ugly enough that I call it "Der Pig". Shown here with it's Dodge stablemates -

And the fun we had driving it home. It got a bit hot, stopped to cool it off and.....

Evidently the absence of tags gets the attention of an APD Police Service Aide. Nice kid, let me go since I had the paperwork and insurance.

Loud, rough, and ugly, but useful. It is also turning out to be a bigger project than my Duster. I hope to have one of my 440's done by this summer to replace the 413, and maybe find a donor truck to get a decent cab and front clip from. Still and all, gotta love them ramp trucks!

well, I dont have any real good shots of my truck, which is a 2004 Ram 4 door Hemi, but heres a partial pic with my trailer in it's "before" condition. Also included is a picture of the "after", when I painted it to use as a float in the Homecoming parade. Our team colors are black and red, so I took the liberty of putting the new Dodge red stripes on it for a little color!! Geof
