More Problems….
Found some transmission fluid in the antifreeze after I drained my cooling system.
I assume this means that the cooler in the rad has failed.
I was thinking of just capping up the radiator and running an external cooler.
There are so many coolers out there I was not sure which one to use, what size, etc. (part numbers and/or links would be very helpful).

At this point I need to keep the cost down because the car has depleted my fun money. I am assuming that an external cooler is my cheapest route to get the car back on the road and have some fun before winter.

It is a 727 transmission on a mildly worked over 318.
Thanks in advance.

IMHO. check for space in front of the rad. a good kit should have high pressure hose. and be careful of the hose rubbing sheet metal. i would take some old rad hose split it and cover the cooler hose for extra protection. . and if you can use two clamps on the hose. then double check after some run time. all so this would be a good time to put an external filter. these cats should be able to help you. http://www.areds.com/ ALL filters have an IN and OUT. i think the rear trans fitting is the INPUT. but double check for your self.

IIRC that is correct, it's been a while since I plumbed mine.

To the OP, if you had trans fluid in the coolant, there a good chance there coolant in the trans!

Yes, I had the same concern about antifreeze in the trans after I posted that.
I should probably drop the pan and see unless there is a simpler way to check.
I did not notice any problem with it shifting before I started work so hopefully there is no damage.

I guess while the pan is off I should deal with the morning sickness……
I am going to start a new thread for suggestions on that now that the pan is coming off.

I never considered an external Trans filter. Sounds like a good idea but that may have to wait for another day while I deal with some of the more pressing issues.
I just bought the car this summer and the money has been flying out of my wallet faster that it is going in.

Coolant will turn the trans fluid strawberry milkshake pink.
It will also destroy the trans clutches and bands in a heartbeat, so hope it's clean red fluid.

Go to a junk yard. Most newer pickups have an AUX cooler mounted up front. Front tranny po,rt goes to cooler, rear port is return line.

Antifreeze affects the glue that holds the friction material to the friction plates and the bands. As Trailbeast said, it will turn the transmission fluid into a pink milkshake, and sooner or later, you're going to have to rebuild the transmission.
Long manufacturing makes a great transmission cooler. They are also sold under the Tru-Kool name. They are built like a radiator and are not of the old style tube and fin cooler. Much, much better type cooler. I've never seen a cooler that had a specific inlet and outlet, just hook the lines up and go.
