What is the proper routing for the cooler lines on a 727?I am using #6 lines thru the radiator and external cooler, does it matter which way the fluid flows?

It doesn't matter which way it runs through the radiator but if you're going to run the cooler as an auxilliary unit then it should pass through it last before returning to the tranny. That way the rad does the initial cooling, which presumeably would be hotter than the external cooler. That's what I see the manufacturers recommend and have always done myself. Fitting at the front of the trans is the feed line, rear is return.

I've actually heard of running it through the auxillary cooler first, THEN through the radiator in-tank cooler. That way less heat is introduced in to the coolant.

That's how I just plumbed mine.

never heard of that and don't understand the thinking behind that... you want it to go through the radiator first.. its like dipping hot piece of metal into water.. cools fast. then it goes to the aux cooler to cool even more.

i agree with joe. if it was the other way it would not cool as efficiently.

I have done them both way and find very little difference. I use a infrared thermometer to do my tests with so I see actual results.

When I worked for Hyster forlklifts as a mechanic they introded a new style of lift in 95 and from the factory they had the fluid running through the radiator first then through the aux. cooler. They had engine overheating problems (mainly in enclosed factories) and we tried everything to keep them from overheating and didn't gain much. Finally we switched the trans. cooling around so it went through the aux. cooler first and then to the radiator and that solved the overheating problem. The trans. didn't run any hotter either. I know were not talking about a forklift here but the principal is the same.

Some aux. coolers also have an electric fan on them to make them more efficient.
