I was noodling through speed channel the other day and a show called search and restore was working on a Hudson with an a-727 trans..I missed some of it but they said they were installing a bolt on unit to the back of the trans to increase gas millage (but nit hurt performance) but over 20%.

I have done some searching but I cannot find it.

Anybody have any info on this and I hope it isn't really $$$$$

Thanks
Ian.

ya gear vendors makes a bolt on unit to give you an overdrive, but it's not cheap....

................and I doubt that it'll fit one of our A-bodies without the dreaded "tunnel work."

Wow. Found it. It is a bolt on job.

RPM at a high speed cruise was down from 4,000, to just under 3,200
at 85 mph, and about 2,700 at 70 mph-perfect.

But at a cost of over 3K before shipping, it is very expensive.

Lastly, a lot of carbs such as the Holley, cannot do overdrives ..

I know a local with one on his Challenger , it took three try's with three units to get one that would work right and not eat itself but he likes it now .

Wow, that's inconvenient.

Otherwise, SEVERE transmission damage WILL result. Depending on your accelerator bracket, you will need one of the following throttle studs: Holley P/N 20

to work with ANY other automatic overdrive transmissions.

Hi Bruce. I assume you copied that from Holley's website? If so we're not talking a factory Mopar trans. here, he's talking about using a Gear Vendor's ad on OD unit. Even if we were talking using a factory Mopar trans. they can easily be modified by using the bracket and an OD electric function kit. I imagine Holley just says that to cover their butts

:banghead: LMAO, somehow that point escaped me at the moment. I see no reason it won't work with the GV. The linkages will remain the same for the trans. And I agree, I'm sure the geometry issue could be remedied.

I am trying to gear up for another run at our restoration.

Bad sport got it... I had a friend trying to get me up to speed on american carbs ( all my experience is on SUs) so when I got home, I looked through the 670 manual and are wondering if I made a mistake in buying this puppy.

I have a non overdrive 727 so this is not relevant for me but I thought it was strange when I saw the show with the Hornet on search and restore TV and saw that the unit is essentially an overdrive for all three gears and realized, my carb wouldn't work if we moved that way...this was before I saw the cost.

Sorry if I created confusion..not my intent.

But I am curious, if we run this carb and do a a518 trans swap, will this carb work ?

Thanks, Ian. A518 overdrive transmissionA518 overdrive transmission

Yes, the carb will work. The Holley thing about the GM Od's is about the TV cable on the transmission itself and you need one of their adapters on the throttle arm of the carb to make it function correctly. (It's a geometry vs. pull thing). I've seen the 518 done plenty of times, but am not versed on it.

Revhendo,

Thank-you. I feel better now. I shall tuck that information aside.

Appreciate your response.

Ian.
