Well I just installed my shifter linkage, and I feel that something is clearly wrong with my shifter, I take it maybe its too old (came with the car when I bought it, the car sat for 13+ years before I took it home).

Anyways it doesnt feel smooth, and I cannot for the life of me figure out how to put it into reverse, if it can even go into reverse. Sometimes it just like freezes up and I got to mess with it to get it to go back into neutral.

I attached some photos.

it says
US PATENTS
3216274 3306126

I could not find any numbers on the shifting levers.

Let me know if im doing something wrong, or if it needs a new shifter.

Also what kind of shifter is this? I believe sometime if hurst knock off maybe?

is a rebuild a better option or getting another one?

I apologize for the crappy floorpan cut out for the A883, It was there when I bought it! Im gonna buy a tunnel from brewers.

Having trouble finding reverse sometimes... It still sounds like it may be out of adjustment. How did you do the adjustments? Was the shifter locked with a pin in neutral? it does look dirty - debris in the mechanism and create bind and difficulty in shifting. You also need to make sure you have the proper rods and mounting plates at the trans and the shifter to trans mounting plate.

Well I aligned them with a drill bit down the center of the shifter levers. I did not do any adjustments. Didnt know you could!

How can I check to make sure gears get disengaged?

I followed this diagram.

Put trans in neutral, remove the rod clips at the transmission drop rods out of way. install pin in neutral make sure the pin bottoms out on the shifter plate. make sure trans levers are in neutral detent by hand. Re-install rods adjust them by turning on the swivels in or out as needed there should be no slop and go right into the holes. install washers and clips. make sure linkage doesn't have excessive play if it does something else may be worn levers etc...
