I thought I'd share a tool I fabricated, to save members pain and aggravation.
I had my new sure-grip unit from Dr. Diff placed into my 489 third member by my friend at Joe's Transmissions and installed it into my 8.75 rear over the weekend.
What a freakin bear to get that pumpkin up into the hole.
The rear was only 18” off the ground (dirt) so laying under it I couldn’t get any leverage on the "80 pound oblong bowling ball with teeth".
I got a smashed finger and tore one cheap fiber gasket trying to get it in, so I ordered a Ratech 5101R neoprene gasket from Summit, which worked fine.
I had to build a wooden truss to lift the the pumpkin to the proper height, and keep the holes aligned to the studs so I could slide it onto the studs. It's now bolted up, hooked to the driveshaft and the axles are in. Now I just have to add my gear oils and S-G diff-slip lube.
Thanks to all those who offered advice for this replacement.
