Got a set of 596 heads I’m going to put on my 340. Machine guy ruffed in a set of 2.02 valves and a new set of guides. I’m working on the bowls for the first time, there’s a lot of meat there. Hope I didn’t go to far I’m still at 88 percent of the valve on my throat

Great start, those iron heads can be a bear to clean up! At 88% you could still open them up a few percent and be good. Should be a definite increase in flow over rough cast bowls/ports. 65'

Still getting used to the die grinder, that my awesome and beautiful girlfriend got me for Christmas. Taking the exhaust from 1.3 to 1.4 pretty much bringing it out to the hardened seats

I am certainly not an expert but from what I have gathered it is better to leave it on the smaller side like your 89 percent, especially for a street build, rather than opening it too much.

Agreed. True street use my magic number is 89.5%. J.Rob

Not going to be anything to extravagant. I have a 507/510 lift cam. Was hoping to get about 250 out of the intake. theoretically shouldn’t be to far off, I don’t know, the j heads with 2.02 valves flowed 220 stock and upto 275 ported, from what I found. The 596 are supposedly a j head casting with the smog stuff added, flowing 199 with 1.88 valves. Just going off what I researched. I’m sure some one around here would know more

Was excited to see how much I was able open up the exhaust, did some gasket matching and smithing out the pinch points. Definitely think it was worth the time, even though it’s not a professional job, I really think im going to gain quite a bit with what I’ve got
