turbo 6 bangers post here

My boss is gonna hate you guys....because I have been addicted to this thread all day!! This is awesome!!! I have a lot of experience with turbo applications and putting a turbo on my 340 Dart just was too extreme for the way the motor is built. However the minute i read this I was hooked!

I want to go out and find a /6 63-64 dart gt with a manual and build one!! I'm a part dealer so I get discounts on all of that stuff and I'm just dying to build one now! It'd be fun to see how it matched up to my buddies and their turbo'd old school VW VR6 jettas and what not.

I seriously dig it guys! This is awesome!

You'll have a LOT of fun with that setup...

I'd seriously consider a 904 t-flite though... turbos like them! And the kind of torque these turbo'd slant sixess make is hard on clutches...

Think about it....:glasses7:

The Valiant is ready to race, but for pre-lubing the rockers and filling the fuel cell with fresh gas. I am currently working on obtaining the correct wiring harness for the truck to hook up the trailer lights. I already have the trailer brake/controller wiring, so we're "getting there." It's about 75 miles to the strip with no hills on the highway, and no sharp curves, so getting it there should be a breeze.

Wish us luck... :)

Hay Bill :coffee2: Racing season is in here in Arkansas and when you load up for the trip to go for a few passes can you let me know ?
We are waiting on the grounds around the track to harden up (to soft to drive on) to have the first race day. Thank you in advance :glasses7:

Ok, I have a '77 Dodge D100 with a slant six and Im going to turbocharge it. I already bought a turbocharger from an '87 Buick GN that has 30-40k miles on it. It didnt come with the exhaust elbow or the wastegate actuator. I am getting both of them for $54 From someone on TurboBuick forum. The thing is, I know stock boost capability for a stock slant is 10psi, but the stock GN wastegate is set at 14-15psi. How do I get it so the max boost is 10psi with the GN wastegate?

If I had that problem and didn't want to buy an external wastegate, I'd go to the Buick turbo forums for an answer; I am sure those guys do this all the time...

Good luck!:blob:

assuming there is adjustment on the stock wastegate you should be able to play with the preload to get the wastegate to open a little sooner. for example the rod coming out of the actuator should have threads on it. pop the clip off of the lever and turn the end in so there isnt as much pressure holding the gate shut. on a side note, a stock slant will hold up to 15psi with the right tune.

I just found this video and could be the fix I was looking for! Anyone ever done something like this?

How VERY COOL!!!! Thanks so MUCH for posting that!!!

THAT is the value of this forum, enhanced so much by guys like you, who take their time to share valuable information like this.

That's why I keep coming back...

Ok, I'm planning my exhaust right now and I'm trying to figure out what size piping I should do (I'm eventually going turbo and I don't want to redo my exhaust) and its between 2.25 and 2.5". Also, I'm going to use a Magnaflow glasspack and I wonder if I should get one glasspack and Y it off after it, or Y it and go with 2 glasspacks (one for each pipe since Im having dual outlets). If anyone has any insight on this, please let me know. Thanks!

I have no insight to share, but I DO have an opinion...

My opinion is that, once the turbo is an operating part of your exhaust system, you probably won't NEED a muffler... Turbochargers homogenize the sound waves in the exhaust, and quieten things down to a large degree. You might want to run a 3"-dia. pipe out the back (from the turbo) but, I doubt that you'll need any more silencing than that.

I wouldn't use pipe any smaller than 3"... Tubos really appreciate a free-flowing downside...

Just my 2-cents...

Well I decided to get 2 2.5" Magnaflow glasspacks for now...if 3" is the way to go, then I guess I'll have to redo it when the turbo build is complete. Not a biggie...exhaust piping is relatively inexpensive and I know plenty of people who do good welding.

Aaaaaaand I think I was just convinced to have a turbo header made for the truck...pending the quote on how much a friend of a friend will build it for. He said the mild steel header with coating would be a very good option and cheaper than stainless. I know he'll give me a good price, but not sure if it will be cheap enough for me to say "ok" when I can build a perfectly good j-pipe for $100-150. LoL

Valiant is all back together and running better than ever I do have a couple things to take care of my fuel pressure regulator is acting up and I just ordered a rebuild kit for it and I might need to change out my altnetor im having some charging issues but I'm planning a trip to the track this weekend if I can get the little bugs worked back out..

STAY TUNED Aaron

Hopefully with some video

GREAT NEWS, Aaron... we are definitely tuned in!!!

Bill

PS I may have some news soon, too...:blob:
I just bought a new video camera; now all I have to do is figure out how to use it...

That's good news Bill.:blob: now you guys can show all that hard work off.....

I've been working the winter bugs out over the last, couple weeks, I drove tbe valiant into work today for the first time this year. There still some minor fine tuning needed but the TOAD is running better than ever building boost. I pulled a couple of full pulls with hard launches and everything is close to spot on.
15 pounds of boost right now 8 pounds of boost coming out of the hole at 3200 rpm. This year we should see 20 psi plus and with some chassis adjustments you guys will be impressed if I can get some video this little beast is a blast to drive.

Aaron,

we were going to take it out on the highway for a test drive, to read the A/F meter, but had no power to the coil... wouldn't start. I couldn't FIND the @#$^&**^%!!! MSD wiring diagram (6-AL Digital/non-programmable) so I came home to see if I can download it from the MSD website. Wish me luck...

Do you have an estimate of what your Toad will turn at 15 pounds of boost? Sounds awesome!!!

Bill

Bill to be honest I'm not sure but if I had to guess mid 7's in 1/8 I was consistently running low 8 second last year on 12 psi of boost and shitty 40 foot times and on 5 1/2 cylinders. At some point in the next month or two ill be installing my transbrake, I probably should of done it over the winter but I get it done one way or another.

first test drive with the valiant today. went good afr was where it needed to be when it needed to be. spooled fast. didnt hit the boost psi it was supposed to because i didnt adjust the bov. just got it and put it on so it was bleeding pressure. all in all im very happy. gotta take it to the track for some wot testing and turn it up.

Rusty it sounds great and looks like it's running pretty good. There's a sense of pride these little turbo Slants bring to the driver. Good luck and keep us posted. What's your plans on boost? They wake up around 10 psi.
Aaron

i wanna go mid 13's in the quarter mile so what ever that equates to in boost is where ill be. should be somewhere around 12psi maybe less.

I'd guess that 10 pounds would do it if everything else is "right." Wallace calculators says that 265hp will get you there in 13.50 seconds at 100mph in a 3300-pound car if everything is maximized (gearing, etc.)

That should be a piece of cake at 10psi...:blob::blob

Bill, if all i need is 10psi ill be ecstatic. the way it runs already i believe you may be right.

well turns out my afr isnt as good as previously thought. for some reason i though i was shooting for 12.5 and i had 13.2 so figured i was close. apparently im shooting for 11.5. im gonna try some vent tube extensions and see where that takes me. if that doesnt clear it up im gonna jet up the secondaries. overall drivability is excellent part throttle cruise is 15+ so im going to leave the primaries alone. im loving the extra power. thing pulls like a freight train straight to 5k with no pining, popping, surging, backfiring or anything just runs awesome. on 6 month old 87 octane no less. i know its a bad idea but i gotta get it out of there before i turn it up. also still running my stock distributor setup. gonna pull it tomorrow and limit the throw on the mechanical advance. (i know i should have done these things before pounding on it but its been more then a year in the making and i was giddy when i felt the initial boost, im sure some of you can relate)gonna get the best tune on it i can this week. i have a race that i run every year coming up on sunday. cutting it a little close for my liking but i should be able to get it all together. :burnout:

on another note. what is the expected pressure drop from the carb hat to the manifold? my waste gate is set to 8psi but the gauge i have tapped into the bottom of the carb is holding steady at 5. there are expected losses from the large intercooler im running and the over sized piping but that shouldnt account for more then 1psi at best. im tempted to hook another gauge up to the carb hat to see what the actually pressure is not just what the motor is seeing.
