I have a 74 dart swinger with a 318. I am going to do a engine swap with a turbo conversion my question is what will be the best base engine my choices at 360 la, 5.9 mag, or 5.7 Hemi. My biggest concern is block strength. I want to be able run it hard without worrying about cracking the block. I am doing forged internals and a fuel injection. My second concern is throttle response.

Since you already have the teener, stroke her out to 390ish, and call it done.Oh, wait, the stroker kits might not work with a turbo. You would need custom pistons, to go with that 4 inch arm. No biggie.

Hey, theres a guy here selling just what you need. Its a 40something SBM with a 4-bolt X-block and nice heads. You will just need to dish the pistons a little and swap in your custom cam, badaboom. Just do a quick search. It was just yesterday IIRC.

I think the LA block is good to about 600, I don't know if the magnum block is weaker or not. Don't know much about the new hemi I can't afford to tinker with one.

I rebuilt my 318 and threw 360 heads on it which flow better but lower compression. I am hoping to throw some boost at it when I can afford to. I am doing this whole thing on the cheap though.

I feel like if the new hemi block can handle 600 hp that might be your best bet though. I mean its already got sensors for fuel injection so your halfway there for efi. Id bet the overall engine design is better as well.

5.7 Hemi all the way if you have the $, there is a turn key 73 dart with one that runs 8's on moparts for sale, its not mine.

As do Magnums for a much lower pricetag. Here's a vote for the 318 Magnum as a basis.

Typically the power's not an issue so much as the tuning and condition. Small issues have big consequences- but that's true of big power in general.

Not a bad idea...5.2s are nearly free for the taking in many places. Even a mild setup will make enough power to plant a smile on your face...and the block is plenty strong enough to push into the 10s...
