turn signal lever broken

so i was driving down the street the other day and came to a stop light. put on my left blinker and went to make the turn. all the sudden my steering wheel wouldn't turn, so i pulled hard and the my turn signal lever fell off. WTF?

Mines been broken for 15 years so I just have to hold it in place up or down when I turn and then it springs back into the middle when I release it(at least I never leave my signal on that way):-D. It was a lot easier to do when my car was an automatic with power steering though.

that little plastic deal that cancels the turn signal inside the steering column is available. I got mine from www.rockauto.com

Also could just be the screw that retains the turn signal handle backed out and jammed against the steering wheel. Pulling the steering wheel for inspection is simple. Pull it and look at things.
