U-Haul car trailer experience?

-
I e used them five times with C body cars, one a wagon. Other than the wagon being tail heavy and keeping my speed lower (read speed limit) they all towed fine. When I used a Ram 2500 for towing duties, I didn't hardly notice the car and trailer. I've used a Uhail F150 and it was great, but their GMC's sit lower, and can cause a wobble with the trailer. But those trailers are solid, as mentioned. I'd use them again without question.

I used one once years ago. It was the biggest, ugliest, hermorphadite lookin thing ever. But it worked really good and pulled like a dream.

I have towed the u-haul trailers cross country at least a dozen times.
Trailers are built well. On one cross country trip a trailer had an issue and headquarters found the nearest u-haul store and switched the trailer out with me so I didn't have to wait for a fix. Only one flat over the years. Taken care of by the local dealership which did take a little while but they fixed it.
Get the INSURANCE !! These can be stolen easily and if damaged can be expensive to fix.
Car dollies are really not for more than a few hundred miles. I have had a tire go out on a car being towed with a dolly and it did damage it a little bit. Flat tire happened with a tornado visible within a mile of where we were.

Reputable company.

Morning Greg !
From my experience. There's not much storage space on those trailers. Only the troughs for the tires to ride in.

Trailers are overbuilt.

You don't see that much anymore, on anything.

Definitely ask the one way vs two way price.

If there is a pattern, like people moving to Florida, it could be a substantial difference.

Yep. One way OUT of California is about five times as much $$$ as going IN.

Hey all, thanks for the great feedback. I feel pretty good about having a successful trip now. Will be reserving online and getting the insurance. I can't imagine that my daughters clothes, kitchen stuff, and misc small furniture will weigh more than a couple hundred pounds, shouldn't be any extra stress on the trailer to fill it up. Just a few bulky items that would keep us from getting it all in the car. The rest will go in the bed of my truck. Will bring along a couple sets of heavy straps that I used to tie down my Cuda when I brought it home to backup whatever they provide. I tend to overdue it when it comes to packing or securing loads. I realize after seeing some pics with cars on them that there really isn't any extra cargo area on the trailer, but that won't be an issue. There are several potential pickup spots in Waco and a couple of them look like they carry more vehicles and trailers on hand so I will try to go through them because they'd be more likely to have spare "stuff" on hand. Plan in calling the local store before I reserve online to get a feel for them.

One thing I forgot to mention was that they don't supply any straps for the rear of the vehicle, so bring along a good ratchet strap for that and you'll be set.

My experience is that the trailer is only as good as the retailer you rent them from. Sure they are overbuilt, but if you look at the abuse some of them get, it is amazing how well they hold up. Ask the rental location if they can show you the maintenance records on the trailer, latest packing of the wheel bearings, tire pressures, brake checks etc... Inspect the wiring connections and the safety chains, look at the tires for tread depth, mismatched tires, sidewall conditions etc... You know the drill. I've used them a lot with about 16 major moves under my belt and have since bought my own car trailer.

C body 4215 lbs.
700 miles
E-body FJ6 M46 2790 lbs.
600 miles
E-body FE5 M46 2000 lbs
1700 miles
E-body EV2 M46 2400 lbs
1850 miles
These trailers pull fine between 70 and 80 but your not supposed to drive faster than 55 according to their rules.

Notice the blue newport has another foot of trailer to use.
On the FJ6 Sassy Grass barracuda you can see the tire straps.
You can see on the red barracuda that there are a few attachment areas to install pullers and the trailer will accept dragging cars on with no issues even with flat tires or no tires.
The EV2 is just a picture of the passengers side strap and the
Sangre De Cristo Mountain range in the background.
The last picture is the chain that they provide to go around the rear axle.

The Newport is 1500 lbs heavier than the cuda's so my "opinion" is that you could pack the 3200 lb CRV with another 1000 lbs of iron and be fine.
The usual reason vehicles are restricted from use on these trailers is because they are too long or too wide.
My chevy truck won't fit on it as the wheel base is too long.
My Dodge truck won't go on one as it's too wide.
Typically U-haul has 2 sizes of this style trailer. Ask the dealership.

One thing to remember, and I know this doesn't apply to the original poster, but a big overhang is going to adversely affect towing. When I towed my Dodge Maxi van the wheels were placed the same as this Newport, no room to spare, and the back end of the van hanging out there was like the tail wagging the dog. Couldn't go over 50 without severe sway. I was towing with a 2500HD Silverado with excellent brakes, but thank the Good Lord for that surge brake.

Too much tongue weight can cause the trailer to try to steer the tow vehicle.

Not enough tongue weight (and too much weight on the rear of the trailer) can cause the trailer to steer the tow vehicle.

Gotta get it right.

Used them 3 times to run Max 300 miles round trip to Carlisle and back. And yes running at 70 was not an issue. I used the '92 Dodge B350 1 ton Church Van. I also used one to run Max to the repair shop on the other side of Philadelphia. I will not do that again. The Philly streets are not made for a car trailer. I am having a rollback bring him home. As far as a tow dolly is concerned, they will not let you use one for an AWD vehicle. Also, check the price difference for one way as compared to local.
