Unported head quickness?

1972 Duster
70 340 30 over TRW 10.5 pistons, stock rods and crank, X heads Just a very little bowl work, stock valves, solid 528 cam Victor 340 intake, 750 carb, 904 trans, 8 3/4 430 gears, 002 003 springs snubber, ran 11.62 at 116mph

Laugh all you want, it's all true no BS. It's all in getting the right combination. Race all season testing. Started out with 4 speed 12.40 down to 12.14 but kept braking parts axle, ring and pinion, So went to auto 727 ran 12.04 change convertor 11.94 change trans to 904 ran 11.79 got it down to 11.62 on mopar day at the valley. Good Headers, Harland sharper roller rockers, 28 x 10.5 slicks, timing 38 degrees, 28 thousand head gasket.

Whoooooaaaa

I believe ya. Smilies just for levity.

took a stock 2006 5.7 hemi added a used hughes 480 lift camshaft and lifters bolted on a modman intake and an enderle injector and pump.
Transmission 727 with a few upgrades (no trans brake) that my mechanic built, bought a used chinese 4500 stall converter
Car is a 2950lb 67 Barracuda with 12pt cage, ladderbars and alterkation front end. Willwood brakes. 8 3/4 with 4.56 gears and 13x30.5x15 MT slicks
Ran a 10.90 first run then a 10.71 two runs later at 6700rpm! motor really spins fast!
Decided to slow it down to 11.35 and 6000 rpm so it would not blow up.

Since then totally rebuild motor with Hughes stroker kit and a used blower running 10% overdrive. Had new seats installed in the head rest is still stock. Had Dave at Hughes cut me a custom cam (specs I will look up and post soon) Bought a new torque converter, 5500 stall but it is slipping real bad.
First three runs high 9's low 10's but redline at 7500 bumped up rev limit to 7800 still no better.
bought a new set of slicks 12x33x15 and installed 4.10's ran 9.32 @ 122 mph had to let off at just over half track due to rev limiter again. Torque converter is going back for a re cut . Hope to see 8.80 in the future. Oh ya I leave off idle and lift the tires for about 60-80ft.

Here is the info on my new cam

SER3842MHLN-114+4, which would be 238* intake duration @0.50 (.360 lobe) and 242* exhaust duration @ 0.50 (.367 lobe) It would have a 114* lobe seperation angle and have 4* advance ground it.

this is from an email from Tim from Hughes
It's funny cause David freiburger says gen3 hemis don't rev! Ok

Who is David Freiburger? He obviously has never raced a 3rd gen hemi!

Ill tell ya it revved so fast I was in second before the wheels touched down and 3rd wasnt much later. Launch off idle and shift at 7500!
Revved like I shifted into neutral instead of 3rd lol

David is Host of Roadkill, Hot Rod Garage and a bunch of Utube channel shows. I believe he is still a contributing Editor of Hot Rod magazine and oh he is the dude that started and still operates Drag Week.
Anyone please correct me if I am wrong or you have something to add.

As cast Speedmaster heads, I bought the castings and had my engine builder put them together.
1968 Valiant full interior and glass minus radio. Gonna guess its around 3200 with me in it.
LA 360 stock crank and rods
Icon 741 pistons about 10.6:1
Oregon Cam Grinding 242/248 @ .050" .600" lift solid roller cam
performer RPM, 750 double pumper
Stock type 273 type adjustable rockers 1.5 ratio
Doug's Headers with a 17" header extension and some turn downs, no mufflers or exhaust yet.
Lock up 904 from a 1982 Cordoba with a TF2 shift kit
A PTC lock up converter that was supposed to stall at 3500 but is a bit tight at 2800 which is likely keeping this car out of the 11's at this point.
8.8" ford explorer rear end 3.73 Limited slip
Super Stock springs, slant six torsion bars, Mancini bolt on subframe connectors welded in.
26x8.5 Mickey T pro drag radial

First weekend out it ran a 12.20 @ 114.37mph

OK crew. Another idea I had. This is, kind of like a , "Build it on the cheap" thread. As the title states, unported heads save a lot of money.

Big block, small block, /6ers as well, factory iron heads preferred, aftermarket heads welcomed. Though aftermarket heads are a little bit of self thread defeating purchase, I guess, if ya ain't got any heads, you'll need to get some, so, they might as well be added in. :thumbrig:

"How fast have you gone with "UNported heads?"

Not your buddy, not your neighbor, not your Ma'am, well, maybe...LOL

Seriously, list the combo, what you did to the engine, and the rest of the goodies in/on the car that get you there. Dead stock engine? Let'em know. Rebuilt, tell us the parts! Stock carb'd? Let us know. Exhaust manifolds, state it! Give up the goods and help a fellow MoPar guy pound some pavement or budding racer get going.

That’s great but doesn’t help anybody. Please re read the first post and take note to how others have responded to the post on how they did it.
Thanks for helping others go quick with stock heads.

If we start deleting threads for bickering, there won't be any threads left.

Update I rebuilt the tranny and put a 4000 stall in while the tranny was out. I went out this weekend and raced it but was shifting early to run a 12.0 and slower class.

I was able to make one full pass in the heat of the day (85) after being eliminated and the car went 11.77 @ 114.35mph.

I have yet to really fiddle with the tune, I am sure there is bit more there but I don't have a cage yet so I am not too concerned about it right now.

I posted more to let guys know what is possible with that combo, so i hope you leave the post up for a eeferance pount. At that time (1998) budget was rather tight for the level i was shooting for.

I still think it’s awesome and the fact you’re sharing it. I also know you have it up in the racers section so everyone can see all the parts. I have to apologize because I should have entered the laughing guy in pictured below.

Post on Greg!

It's very helpful to me Greg

Hopefully untouched, out of the box cnc TF's qualify for this thread....

73 Duster, 3200# (estimated give or take a few pounds), 408 stroker, 12.5:1 CR, .660 lift 258/264 @ .050 solid roller, TF heads and intake, Thumper 4150 carb, TF727 with 5800 PTC converter, 4.30 gear on a 29x10.50w Hoosier, 3600 DA, high elevation track, soft launch (2000rpm) off foot brake shifting at 7000. Hedman Hustler headers with 1 7/8" primaries and 3.5" collector through a complete 3" fabricated stainless steel exhaust with x-pipe, mandrel bends and Dynomax UltraFlow mufflers. 10.82 @ 123 mph

The more I think about it, the more I am pleased with how the car performed, especially since this was the first time out with a brand new build and the fact that we did zero tuning. Running a little rich but decided to leave it alone. Made one adjustment on the rear shocks and caltracs since it was wadding up the tire on the hit. This car will run a mid 10 at our home track with very little tuning and probably dip into the .40's.

Oh hell yea that qualifies!
Job well done.

What did you do for headers (make and tube size)& exhaust?
Muffler and pipe size?

Your car looks really nice.

Thank you. I edited the post with info on the exhaust but basically it has Hedman 1 7/8 primaries, 3.5" collector flowing though a complete 3" exhaust with x-pipe, UltraFlow mufflers and tail pipes.
