Mopar truck motors used to be Yellow, like Fargos and 60's. Now all I can find is CAT motors painted yellow.

I thought I remembered most of that, but listening to the "experts" at car shows, most of whom got it wrong it seems, I got to wondering. They had a lot of ideas, some almost weird.
I just wanted to be sure that since I enter as a numbers matching, original, I wanted to be clear on that. I didn't want to lose points for having an engine that was painted the wrong color.

How well does the paint hold up on the aluminum heads? Did you use self-etching primer? Going to paint my aluminum heads and manifold too.

I would think that the heat would tare it up?

I have aluminum heads. They were new Edelbrocks. Cleaned two or three times with a Scotchbrite pad and lacquer thinner, then used only P4349217AB "Mopar" blue engine paint on them. They have held up fine for over 10 years.

Nope. I used the urethane epoxy primer just like on a car body, along with base coat/clearcoat PPG paint. 1 full season of running it plenty hard and still looks great! I also have the PPG clearcoat on my bead blasted aluminum intake which is holding up awesome.

IIRC I cleaned the heads multiple times with etching Mag Wheel Cleaner (acid) and sprayed them down with my pressure washer. Then I gave them a couple light coats of engine primer followed by a couple coats of engine white (Duplicolor maybe or whatever brands you get at the parts store), then Chrysler Turquoise. Been running since last April and has held up very well, no flaking but the Mancini-brand engine paint isn't super strong I can scrape it off without too much force. The primer and white underneath seem to be tougher I can't seem to scrape through those as easily.
I also cleaned my intake in the same manner and coated it with aluminum-colored engine paint, you can tell it's painted but at least it won't turn all ugly and stained.

I know I'm resurrecting an old thread here but I am gearing up for another engine build (this time a 440) and am looking at "unusual" paint options. Has anyone found a good source for the Mopar gold used on the early big blocks? I also saw mention that some of the early industrial engines were painted yellow @pishta what would be a good brand/color for that? Really want to do yellow or gold with black valve covers and possibly intake manifold, I'm pretty burnt-out on orange, red, and blue and my Duster's 5.9 Mag is painted turquoise which I like but want something different.
I touched up the original engine in my corvette and used Chrysler blue, it was an exact match to the Chevy blue.
I bet they are the same formula the common VHT stuff found in the parts stores. I have found they don't have the turquoise tint the original Chrysler color has.

How about CAT yellow? Im sure that is available in 55 gallon barrels!

Well they do sell it in aerosol cans but it won't give me a price unless I log in... I'm willing to bet they ain't cheap but that is some quality paint, I've worked around CAT engines and the paint is very durable and chem-resistant. I'll hit up my local CAT supplier and see what a couple cans will run. Nothing says "industrial" like CAT yellow lol.

The turquoise I used for my last build was Mancini brand and it had noticeably less "green" than factory color. Why can't any of these companies get it right? Seems so dumb to me lol

I’ve been thinking about engine colors for my build also. I’m leaning toward sublime for the engine with aluminum fabricated valve covers. I want something that will really pop against the cream white I’m painting the car.
