I think I've read more in the past week than I have in my entire hi school years. I have a Smallblock with eddy heads and would like to upgrade the alternator. I purchased a 90 amp Denso but its to tight to the head. Now I'm looking at a gm style but I can't find where anyone has successfully done this with eddies, I'm now considering a Ford 3G but same thing.
I was considering a tuff stuff but I've read that they still suffer at low rpm and that is where I need it due to my fuel injection need a good voltage and right now with my stock alt it surges really bad at idle do to discharge.
Any help would be appreciated.

Use a 70amp denso, the back is thinner. I'm running rpm heads and it fits

I have a square back right now and from what I understand it puts out 60amps and it won't keep up with headlights on while fans are running. Of course I have electric fuel pump and stereo going as well. But that's not useing ac. I'm thinking 100 amp minimum

Also have Eddy heads on a 360, using a 90 amp Denso, made up my own mounts using bottom pivot. With headlights on, dual spal fans running and A/C, 13.8 volts at idle.

I used a 1 wire power master alternator that I had to mount up side down and then I took and altered the original alt. adjuster and mounted it on top. The first picture is how I mount the single field Mopar alternator, but decided against using a external regulator.

Are your fans REALLY drawing so much that a 60 amp isn't cutting mustard?

Spl 440 - it looks like you used flatbar for the bottom mount. Is the alternator bolted to the head at all? I'm just curious on how solid the alt is. Looks pretty simple
Jos- my alt keeps up to everything until I turn lights on . Lights have been upgraded so they draw more than factory

Or when is the square back not pushing? If it's at idle, the 60amp denso will be enough

Bottom mount has flat bar front and rear with a bit of a gap for shimming and a cross brace from inner bar attached at block to outer bar attached at alt bolt
Also when I switch to fuel inj, a 120 amp Denso will bolt in the same mounts, so an upgrade will be no problem if needed.

I am using one of these 70 amp denso's as well.. not edelbrock heads.. but at idle with fuel injection etc, it puts out more than 14 volts!

Running a square back with this upgrade. Also ammeter bypass and Headlight relays.

My upgrade thread. It's been a couple years and does what I needed.
Anyone done this Alternator upgrade.

I looked at that exact thread a few times and I've been very tempted but for the cost I think I want to try for something that puts out more. Thank you.

I have a 120amp denso as well, and to shim it out out enough to clear the head, the pulleys were off. Maybe you could shim out the pulleys too, but the 70amp is a strong little unit so I just put it into the someday box

OMG !!!! As my daughter would say.

Ok, I had a closer look and it was stoopid easy. The Eddie heads have a mounting hole on the bottom outer part of the head. Just bolted it up and used the idea of the tightening bracket on the top. Simple. Thanks for the ideas guys

Will the pulleys line up?

Yes. It actually moved the alternator over a couple inches to the outside of the head so there's more forward/ rearward adjustment. I'm in the process of making a bracket off the water pump but I had it mocked up and looks good

I'll take some pics. The bracket was really easy to make, no bends, pretty simple. Now understand, I have very little fab skills, this was done with a cutting torch, grinder and a drill, nothing fancy. AND let me say this...... I'm not done yet!!! It looks like it's gonna be no sweat but you know how tha goes, I'm not finished yet.

I'll post some pics after final boltup

Looks like you've found a good solution. Thought I'd post a couple pics of my alternator setup in case someone else is interested in the future. I'm running a Quality Power "Chrysler Mount Mega-Amp" alternator. Internally, it's a Denso hairpin design - mine is rated at 120 amps at idle and 150 amps max. It's not a cheap option and it's a tight fit with the Edelbrock heads, but it does fit. I installed mine with the CVF racing 8 rib serpentine pulley kit - had to shave off a small amount of material from one of the alternator mounting ears to get the pulleys into perfect alignment.

This is a great thread on the alt. swapping, but back to the lighting, did you upgrade the wiring/harness....or just the lamps? Member crackedback has a kit that is very
effective at boosting the output of stock lamps, and may be a mandatory if aftermarket lamps are used that draw more current, search & there are pics of the difference.
It is pretty dramatic, using the relay kit will improve things much, also check out the sticky on improved lighting or "Modern upgrades".

I have the American autowire kit. Lights are on relays.
