How do you tell the difference between a slant 6 and a V8 member

it all about the mounts...What year are you talking about?

I think they swapped an older V8 with the orginal one.

i thought I had a picture-- anyhow your car should have the spool type mounts-- if it is a small block the mounting ears/ brackets will be the same height welded to the K, if it is a slant style 1 bracket will be taller than the other.

I do not remember the difference from the pre 73 cars, probably something similar in the height of the mounting pad. Lawrence

This is not a complete listing but it should help. These views are from the driver's seat looking forward. If they look out of whack, remember that the steering box bolts onto the left side and the pitman arm bolts to the right.
