Hi!

I am going to use J heads instead of aluminum.
My 318 is equipped with a Lunati 10200702.
Is it wise to use the stock springs?
The recommended springs for that cam are no longer available.

Thanks

73195 is a Comp 995-16.
This is a dual spring that requires machining to the heads.
The 74895 is a beehive.

My suggestion for a single spring option would be a Howard’s 98412

97118 would be the right retainers for the Howard’s.

PRH from above built my heads, I have followed his advice for years. Seems like cutting the head for a dual is a bit more than you want to do.

Will the Howards 98412-K11 kit fit the stock 7 degree valve locks? I really want to keep the original 4 and 2 groove valves.

I would want to measure the valve stems to make sure you get the correct size keepers. You know that kit runs a 7 deg keeper. Just need to determine the valve dia and the number of grooves. Trust but verify is a good moto. I would want new keepers, they are just cheap to replace.

Thanks for helping me out. I always bought complete heads so this was new territory for me. ;)

No problem, it can be intimidating, dropping a valve is BAD! Measuring everything is the best way, you don’t really know what has been done to those heads since they were produced. You are 2/3’s of the way there? You have the spring, you have the retainer, you need the keepers to work with your valve stems. I also would want at least a cheap spring height mic and a cheap dial indicator. To confirm for yourself installed height and double check you have retainer to valve seal clearance. Once you have your parts, you put a checker spring (any Home Depot spring that fits) just to hold the retainer up tight against the keepers. Dial indicator on the retainer and with your finger push down on the valve tip until the retainer touches the valve seal. It should be a bit more than the valve lift of the cam. Your installed height affects your spring pressures. That is the reason for the cheap spring mic. Plus it can tell you if some of the valves are sunken in their seats.

Comp 995-16 have the same specs as the discontinued Lunati 73195-16. 402 lbs/inch, 115 pounds at 1.7 inch installed height. You should really take your heads to someone that can properly set the installed height pressure up properly for you. Done correctly, that's properly setting your seat pressure with shims and ensuring you have adequate seal and retainer clearance at full lift. Also a good time to have a performance valve job done.
