My 340 that was just rebuilt has a lifter tick in it. It currently has nonadjustable rocker arms. I have a set that adjust that came on another motor. My question is how do you adjust them? What clearance do you use? Do you do it running with the valve covers off? Someone Please enlighten me. Thanks Jeff

for adjustable rockers on a hydraulic cam, go zero lash, 1/2 turn to start. you will need the ball and cup pushrods too. you need the sequence out of the mopar engine book. i can find mine tomorrow if you need the sequence.

when he said to go to zero lash, that means to spin the pushrod between your fingers while tightening the adjuster. Zero lash is where is just stops spinning.

You should be adjusting for lifter preload. Not "lash". If you havent done it before, too much preload feels like not enough. So I would be careful with this, or get some local help with it. You will need the right pushrods as mentionned too.

if you do this with the engine running, get an old steel valve cover and sawzall the top off. bolt it on and do the adjustments. keeps most of the oil in the engine

You can't adjust rocker arm style adjusters while they are running because the adjuster is going up and down with the rocker. The reason why you can do this with a Magnum or a Chevy is because these adjusters are mounted on the stud so they are stationary.

Every engine I've ever installed a high performance hydraulic cam and lifters in has had lifter tick. I would consider this normal. Now if it has louder tapping noises then you can go ahead and adjust lifter preload, but otherwise I wouldn't worry about it.

Something to keep in mind as well - I rebuilt a 360 - years ago with a new cam in it. shortly after getting it running, it developed a tick. Thought it was a lifter - Nope - turned out to be a burnt exh manifold gasket, it burned thru a small passage on one part of the gasket, replaced it and the ticking went away. These werent junk gaskets either - fel pro's. Point being to make sure its a lifter and not something else.

One way to check is to run the motor without the valve covers on - I know its messy - and listen to each and feel each rocker arm as it runs, do one side at a time. You'll know when you find it. An Engine stethoscope will help with this too. The adjustable route might be a way to overcome a loose preload as well if thats whats wrong, you'll need shorter pushrods for this set up, crane etc sells them in sets for use with hyd cams and adj rockers.

When and if you locate the offending lifter, I'd pull it out and examine the wear surface against the cam, there should only be co-centric wear circles, no straight lines across the wear surface of the lifter. If there are straight lines - sorry but the cam and lifters are shot, replace them. Usually this happens when the cam is not broken in correctly or the lifters cant spin for some reason.

Good luck with it.

Can someone tell me the procedure on how to adjust the rocker arms? What order? Hot or Cold? The set I have is off of a 273 or 318 I think. Thanks for the help guys. Jeff
