I'm looking to get 300-350hp as cheaply as possible. How close do you think I would get with the following?

stock short block

308 heads - stock apart from port matching, minor clean up and milling to increase compression to about 9.5:1

cam - open to suggestions, i like the idea of running a solid cam and have 273 adjustable rockers (are they worth using even if i run hydraulic?) it's going in a 4 speed car with no power accessories so i don't mind a lumpy idle but don't want to kill mileage - would like at least 15mpg

Weiand dual plane manifold

Carter Thermoquad or Holley 750 v/s

headers - any preference between tri-ys and 4-1?

2.5" dual exhaust

Any comments would be appreciated

I use a mopar performance 284-.528 solid in my 340 street car 10.1 compression.
1 5/8 headers 2 1/2 flow masters 650 holley double pump.
12.50s with 3.91 gears.
my friend runs a comp 280-.480 magnum cam with 273 rockers runs strong.

I have a mopar cam and lifts hyd. 284/484 thats sitting in the shop, thats in good shape, I will sell for say $75 plus shipping. Also the 273 rockers are what i ran in the eng. I had the same combo as dust340,but it was a 360 and was in the same et range.

Get a running core engine, replace the head gaskets with .028 MP ones, mill heads .030 and the intake flanges .028. Stick a small cam, Comp High Energy 268, or XE256H, replace the valve springs and remove the rotaters, bolt it back together with an HV oil pump, a good timing set, and run it.

Ya, what he said, (moper) and Headman headers with 2-1/2 pipe exhaust. Carb of your choice since ethier will do, the Holley has parts on the shelf though I like the T-Q better.
I like the smaller cam idea for total streeablity and a broad early torque curve. There enuff cam there for the goal which will be met with ease.
Your build ideas look very good.

thanks for the advice guys

any suggestions for valve springs?

am I likely to encounter valve/piston interference with the cams listed - I know it's impossible to say for sure without test fitting the engine

plum360415 - thanks for the offer of the cam. i'm haven't decided yet what to run but my preference still leans towards a solid cam

rumblefish360 - I'd like to use the TQ for preference - any tips?

Get the springs matched to the cam..it's easiest. You should have a ton of room for either cam...lol. I wouldnt run the MP284/484 in it..not enough compression for it IMO. I'd also go T quad, and it shouldnt need too much modifying, because they will have very good idles and vaccum levels.

Alot depends on the year of the T-Q. Click here; http://www.thermoquads.com/ I deal with this fella because he's honest, fair and a straight shooter while doing excellent work. Know your engine build first unless your looking for a carb in general, which would be a 1972 or 73 for what ever tranny your going to use.

The 273 rockers are durable enough, but the ratio is more like 1.45 and you will lose effective lift. But I don't think that will be an issue with the combo you are putting together. The advise you are getting from Moper and Rumblefish and others is right on. Can't go wrong with any of it. I agree with Moper on what he said about the 284/484 cam. You do not have enough squeeze for it. TQ is the way to go. Good luck, Terry.

Also if you have a set of the 273 rockers(sdjustable), use them. If you don't and need a set I can halp you out there. I have two sets. Terry.
