I agree with your point but I don't like this example. Electric motor driven fans are not what I worry about. They can fail like anything else but more often than not, they will outlast the car and save horsepower in the process.

No, I've replaced the electric fans on my Jeep and Neon. I do agree with you that a good electric fan will last quite a while. Typically over 100,000 miles. They will save horsepower and as an added benefit, heats up almost instantaneously. It was nice in South Dakota winters.
