I bought this car last night as a parts car for another 65 we're building. Of course I want to check out the vin and be sure I'm not cutting up a decent car. The motor checks out correct, which is why i bought the car, but the vin is a big question mark. The vin plate doesn't appear to have been altered but nothing matches up. It has the stripes like an S car, one of the knuckle assemblies on the front end have the sway bar part. But the rear valance doesn't have an exhaust cut out. It's a 273 2bbl, auto floor shift car. I hoping one of you knowledgeable folks would take a look at the numbers and give me your expert opinion. The vin says: S20003KAN, the motor A 273 12-11, and the core support number is 7C1200133? That’s a state issued VIN tag, and not an original VIN plate. At one time the title was either lost, or the car was scrapped or something of that nature. Good thing you’re cutting it up. And, there is no corresponding numbers in 1965 that tie the drivetrain to the body, thst didn’t start happening until late 1968
Yeah, the VIN has obviously been replaced — look at that extra hole, and that tag looks nothing like a factory tag. Some kind of salvage title, presumably. Would make it very hard to put it back on the road. Why it's a parts car, no doubt.

If it has a title that matches that number then it's the same legitimacy as a factory one.
They usually issue state vins if the original tag was damaged.
I had a 70 road runner with a state issued vin that was issued in 2008, because the dash had been cut up and they cut though the tag and some of the tag was missing. The newer state tags have more info and a "control #" with a number that corresponds with a registry the highway patrol has.
I think this one should be fine with a matching title because it's such an early car that do not have stamped body numbers.
The number on the radiator support should match the order number on your fender tag.

Agreed. If you’ve never seen a state issued tag, it’s an honest mistake to think it originally came with the car. Especially the early A bodies, there is really no identifying information on the VIN tag to speak of.
The “A” prefix stamped on the engine indicates that it is from a 65, most likely the original engine from the car. If there’s a fender tag, a Formula S car would have the digits “31” under the “ab”, indicating a 4 barrel engine.
Well, no title no data plate. It's ok though, I wasn't expecting anything other than what I got, a buildable 273. When I was young I scrapped a number of chargers and road runners, and looking back I wished I didn't. So I'm just trying to be sure there's no regrets scapping this one.
No I've honestly never seen a state issued vin, and I deal with muscle cars everyday. I'm kind of surprised I haven't.

I don't understand all this about "not putting it on the road." If that is a legit state issued tag, and you have the required paperwork (notated title?) why not? And if the title was lost, can't Kansas trace their own VIN?
