I wired one to a keyed source.Direct would get you a drain unless you are using a disconnect switch or something.

Any key sourced wire will be fine, they barley draw a few milliamps.

Would hooking to Big post at alt, give a better truer reading? How would that create a drain???

It will be on at all times then. I personally want to know what is inside the car because it will show problems if there is a voltage drop.
