Was this guy a little anal?

There is a private yard about 50 miles form me where you can roam around several dozen acres of mostly late 50's and early 60's cars with the occasional up to 72 car. Mostly sinking into the ground but still a few pickable parts.

The only stipulation is that you not open any hoods, and the guy will remind you of that several times while you're there.
Some are even wired shut.

Also had one of those "pull one at a time from the barn" things for all of the 1990's.
They would pull one out and it would sit for weeks, months, etc until it sold.
Then in about a week, another would appear.
Was kinda neat to see what they would drag out next.

Ok, I admit that I FK'ed up with the camera thing. I guess I should have known better, especially at my age. I just hope that this doesn't deem me as a total wretch in the eyes of my fellow forumites. I'll smooth it over with the auto wrecker guy, because I love his place, and I want to do more business with him. From now on I'll keep the tools and the camera out of wrecking yards unless given permission, and hopefully this can be a lesson to other forumites.

Nicely done realizing this is a learning experience and you will do things differently because of it. Thinking you’ve done nothing wrong and it’s on the other person is a selfish way of going through life.

I still have to say in all fairness that auto wreckers need to state their rules and regulations in clear terms, (maybe with a big sign at their entrance) or allow no one to enter their yard. It would make things a lot simpler. Not all of us are clear on it, and not all of us are mind readers.

You've gone back to the owner is wrong and I'm right thinking.

The very best thing you can do is ask.

Don't just go Waltzing onto somebody's property and acting like you own it.

As for you guys don't understand what etiquette is. Here's a couple little rules to live by.

Don't go walking into somebody's building if they're not home and have not given you permission to do so. As for that matter same goes for their property.

Don't go handling everything you see without permission.

If you can't understand getting permission to see or do or feel or touch or pick up then you shouldn't be there because you don't have what it takes

Don't be prying things open without permission. Last thing I'd want is a bunch of screwdriver marks on the hoods of my cars.

Don't be window peeping without permission.

And here is a biggy for my horse barn.
Don't show up wearing flip-flops because you won't be getting in you'll be asked to leave.

I KNOW it's his sand box, and like I said, If he's worried about thieves, then SHOULD HE NOT HAVE A NO CUSTOMER'S IN THE YARD RULE???? Do I not have a valid point?

He was being nice to let you pull parts yourself.

Many people like to pull there own stuff since it reduces cost and avoids missed parts.

DONT RUIN IT FOR EVERYONE ELSE.

As others have said, his yard means his rules. If you don’t see any rules, ask to be sure. He is providing a service so you need to respect that.

If you want a yard where there are no rules then set one up. Or you can set up a yard and try to have a rule list near the door but you’ll quickly find yourself adding rules everyday to that list to cover the crazy things the general public thinks is ‘acceptable’ to do like “DO NOT pry open hood with screwdriver”. The next day you’ll need to add “DO NOT pry open door with screwdriver” followed by “DO NOT pry open sunroof with screwdriver” followed by “DO NOT pry open trunk with screwdriver” followed by “DO NOT pry off any parts with screwdriver” along with “DO NOT steal any parts”....... but that’s not gonna means peeps are not going to steal anything.

Agree.
There are always rules, regardless what is in writing. This guy didn't flip out. Just said don't do it. Right there the rule is established. You didn't know it, now you do.
I've been told things by yard owners for where boundaries are. You just oblige them or leave. Not up for discussion. Owner at local yard once said I could get a few things off a Dart that had just come in. It was sitting out on the lane still being processed, fluids drained, etc. Trunk was open and I lifted lid and looked in. It was full of what must have been personal stuff of the previous owner, so I didn't mess with it. When I got back to the office I was questioned if I opened it. The scene and his tone was something like the guy in a movie getting questioned by a mob boss and expecting to lose fingers. Told him I looked, but his guys had it open already. He looked me over and said "OK". Paid for my parts and left. Never had any problems after that. If anything he was easier to deal with. Even let me in 'off limits' trailers and buildings to pick from stashed parts...

Thank christ for etiquette police, I would not want to go astray on life!
Dont get me wrong I'm a very respectful person, but the arrogance and high n mighty bs is laughable. Me? Walking thru a scrap yard WOULD NOT HESITATE to take pictures(and I ain't the only one) ...do a search....on here...lmao.
NOW that being said if/when the owner communicated to me to not take pics, I have ZERO problems following AND respecting his rules. Going back to my popcorn now :elmer:

If they tell me "make yourself at home"...… then look out! I'll raid the fridge, re-arrange the furniture, and park my car in their garage! If they have a problem with it, I just ask "so you didn't mean it?" :D :D

Not talking about the place you take your beer cans to get more beer money.
I'm talking about an old privately owned yard. March your arrogant *** in there with your attitude and see how far you get.

Did you read my first post? I clearly stated that I was trying to move a hood latch with a screwdriver. Does that sound like prying?

The owner thought you were I bet.

We have a local guy with an amazing amount of all muscle car era makes and models parts yard. It is ridiculous in size and stash. He also has enough of thief’s killing his pay check. Now, you call for an appointment and you are met at the front door but never get in the office area. You pay outside and get your part.

He also doesn’t sell junk. When you get your part, it’s good to go. No half *** junk.

It is a real shame people screw these people and make it crappy for us all who would like nothing more than to just roam around and take time to get the part ourselves and maybe even learn something as you pass by it or take it out yourself.

The guy you ran into probably was “Bitten” more than just a few times and that’s why he came on stronger than needed. But the message was sent and received clearly as fine crystal.

As others have said, just go back and play it cool. You already apologized. Just be polite and smile say thanks, etc... be positive and cheerful. Tell him you’ll be back. Make him feel at ease. ThTs the best you can do. If he remains a grumpy bastard, there’s probably not much you can do. In the long run, he will see your not a bad person. Over enthusiastic maybe! LOL! But work towards that working relationship. It’ll payoff.

Nicely put.

There was a nice old man who ran a yard YEARS ago when we were all in school......and well before that......his name was.....yup....James Hendrix. lol Everybody called him one eyed James because he had an accident and lost the vision in one of his eyes. It was just clouded over. He looked like something out of a horror movie but he was a cool old dude. Anyway, first time we went out there, Before we even got out of the car he was asking our names and where we were from. He got to me and he said, "nevermind, yall can go in, I know this one right here". lol I worked at his friends' gas station then and I saw him all the time. If he knew you at all and it was in a good way, you were golden. But don't be somebody he didn't know and just come right on in. He'd sic his dogs on you. lol He sure had the stuff, too. Old Hemis, flatheads, Old Caddy engines, lots of FE Fords, just a pile of all the cool old stuff. Those were some good times.

Lmao, sure a lot of redundancy in the "you've been a bad boy department"! Reminds me of a Bugs Bunny cartoon where he's singing "dog pile on the rabbit" ! I mean really, how many times does the same person have to keep going on and on about it? Can't wait till this virus let's folks who sit home with their mask on go out and get some fresh air. Now where's that popcorn Steve?

I like our local county yard they wont let people in the yard unless they know you Im happy they let me in one time I called for a part and they said they did not have it ,but I went in and found the part they thought they did not have 15 dollars later I was on my way

To those who think I'm a total a**hole, I can at least say with a clear conscience that I didn't wreck or steal anything. And don't get me wrong, I'm not one of those punky kind of people who feel "entitled". My judgement was a little bit off about the pic taking, that's all.

I don't think any of that at all. You did what most normal people would. It's just that most people (including me) wouldn't think of someone's privacy....they'd be thinkin of all the cool old stuff in the yard. I get it, believe me. It's easy to forget you're on someone else's property. No harm no foul. Seems to me you didn't burn that bridge so I wouldn't sweat it.

No you do not.
His property, His rules.
You're lucky if he lets you in again.

I'm lucky if he let's me in again? what kind of logic is that? I wasn't aware of his no pic rule. I wouldn't have done it if I had known before hand.

So here’s a little update. I thought that I would stop and look at the most recent car to show up in front of the barn. Then, I called the number! I talked to the guy who owns them, and he was very nice. When I mentioned that I was posting them and a pic of the sign, he said “make sure you put don’t waste the guys time, he knows what he has and is not interested in games”. Now, since I’m a car guy and told him I was just interested in helping get the word out, he really started to open up. I won’t go into detail, but if you’re a Ford guy, you want to know him. He has over 40 cars to sell, and some very high dollar parts and engines as well! Here’s the latest car to show up, another 427 4 speed car, and it will come with the drivetrain!

I appreciate that.

Lol, differing opinions means constant correction apparently.
All you can eat popcorn George, try it with vinegar sometime.

No pics.

Only if youre good friends would any 'vintage auto wrecker I know' let you take pictures.
Now...One of these **** yards with the octopus on the sign ..or 3 letters, they mostly dont give af if you do...because they have mostly nothing worth af anyways.

You can do your pop up internet store scalping and make a dollar off the commercial dumps..but dont try it with one who specialize in the classics.

Fine line , you crossed.
