I'm in my cube at work and the phone rings. Call display shows our dog walker's number. Uh oh, she never call us unless she tripped the alarm and usually the alarm co. calls first. Sure enough she breathlessly tells me Sammy bolted and she can't find him. He has a tag with our phone number - call home - nada. Back & forth with her a few times then I say eff it I'd better call my wife and get home. I tell Claudia what happened and we hook up on the subway at her stop - 2nd longest subway ride of my life with a crying wife I'm trying to comfort and I am worried sick about the little guy myself. Take a cab from the subway, nice driver very concerned and he told C not to worry, Sammy would turn up.
Check the phone, little flashing light. Sure enough, there's a message. I call back, Nick says we have Sammy, he's curled up on our couch. Played with our dog for an hour. We were so relieved. We got there, Nick and his wife a very nice young couple found him in their backyard sitting under a tree, shaking, cold and scared. She thought he was a stuffed toy at first. They have no idea how he got in there as they have a pretty sturdy fence. They brought him in and comforted him. He travelled about 2 KM and found one place where he would be safe. There is a major street to cross to get there although I think maybe he was able to pass below the street along a stream that's part of the park system.
We are very thankful he was returned to us. People who don't have a dog don't understand just how much they get into your heart and become a part of the family. We would have been devastated if we lost him. My wife thinks it was a small miracle that he wasn't hurt or killed - someone was looking out for him today.
