I'm looking to put some up to date headlights in my 65 Cuda. Can everyone post pix of what they went with? I like the look of some of them and others I think are ugly. Lastly did everyone use any conversion on the wire harness (like what crackedback gold member sells) or are there some that are plug and play. I assume this depends if they are Halogen, LED, and whatever else they have available, I know some draw more power than factory and others draw less.

The 7" round is the world's most common headlamp size, even still today despite very few new vehicles using it; believe it or don't, there are now more good options in 7" round headlamps than there ever have been before. Unfortunately, there are also now more bad options than ever before, and they're all hyped as an "upgrade", so you have to be skeptical and get well and truly educated before deciding what to put in. The Jeep JK Wrangler headlamps will fit, for example, but they aren't worth messing with if you want to see well at night.

Even if you ignore the enormous amount of overhyped junk on the market, even if you stay within legitimate headlamps that genuinely meet recognized technical standards, you can have whatever you want. You can have replaceable-bulb halogens (the best ones are made in Japan by Koito); you can have BiXenons (Hella); you can have LEDs (JW Speaker; Truck-Lite, Peterson). It's all down to how well you want to see at night and what you're willing to spend. The legitimate BiXenons will cost you about $1500 for the pair, yowza. The best LEDs are the J.W. Speaker units in chrome or black. Less-expensive and still quite good are the Truck-Lite and Peterson units. The fun part: all these LED headlamps I've linked are made in America! You'll be shown a lot of "products like this" or "people also looked at" items—lookalike/knockoff junk, steer clear.

When you're figuring costs, keep in mind you will definitely want relays and better wiring for halogens (read this) but not for BiXenons or LEDs because of their low current draw (lower than the original sealed beams).

Also steer clear of suspiciously cheap "HID headlamps" or "LED headlamps" that amount to a halogen headlight (usually a cheap and nasty H4) with an "HID kit" or "LED bulb" in them. No matter whose name is on them or what the vendor claims, these are a fraudulent, unsafe scam. First principles: halogen lamps need to use halogen bulbs. More detail here and here .

Whatever headlamps you put in, it's crucial to aim them properly.

There are other good upgrades to bring an old vehicle's lighting up to snuff for use in modern traffic; see Allpar articles here and here, for example (featuring A-bodies!).

Previous discussions on this board about upgrading lights: here and here.

Full disclosure, I'm the Daniel Stern mentioned in the Allpar articles. Yup, I do sell lighting upgrade equipment, but not on the board here; we've got a board member who offers real nice headlamp relay setups.

I got the sho nuff, bonafide Cibe E code 7" H4 conversions in both my 75 F250 (Gladys) and my 64 Valiant (Vixen) and couldn't be happier. I got the @crackedback relay harness in Vixen, but I did the truck before he was selling his and have a similar harness from Summit in it. Suffice it to say I can see at night very well.

Definitely do relays. Holley just released a led headlamp that visually look like a old school version

My dart sport came from the factory with H4 Hella halogens. Big difference over a standard bulb and they look like the standard bulb for the most part.
The biggest improvement is to move the load over to some relays. Standard bulb with relay mod is a huge improvement.
To me the LED lights just look wrong.

I have crackedbacks kit in my 64 Valiant with a set of lamps I bought at Carlisle a few years back.
His kit is easy and well made.
Should be a few vendors this weekend at Carlisle selling lights.

I went with German made Hella headlights with the H4 bulbs. They look good and work well. I don’t drive much at night but I really like the fact the glass is actually flat and not curved like a standard sealed beam. I ordered them thru a Volkswagen supplier and they were like $150 a set but work great and don’t over load my standard 60ish amp alternator at idle.

Really? Do tell. What's the code for that on the build sheet? Never heard of it.

Swiss export car. The car was shipped over there partially assembled. The halogens were added along with recaro buckets (super comfy) and several other oddball items. The headlights are supposed to flash with the turn signals but that feature was disabled long before I got the car.

That's purdy dang cool!

The headlights I'm using in my '65 are Halogens. I don't remember the exact make because I
removed them from my '48 Plymouth when it was wrecked. They have a large fixture on the back so I had to modify the buckets. I also use LED dash bulbs that I bought on eBay with 10 in a package for around ten bucks. It sure is nice to see at night.

I used a relay system to get brighter beams and stop the diming when at idle.
