67 Baracuda with 727 auto floor shift.
When I go to start car sometimes nothing happens.
Buy if I move shifter from park to neutral then back to park it’ll turn over.
Been doing it for years
Should I be concerned?
Thanks Joe

poorly adjusted shifter - the neutral safety switch keeps the car from starting, or trying to start and lurching forward or back. It is in the transmission and if you are not completely in the right gear (park or neutral) it won't allow the car to start. If your shifter isn't adjusted properly the shifter may show it in the right place, but it is a bit off at the transmission. All shifters have an adjustment to get it right. usually best to disconnect the shifter at the arm on the trans, put the trans solidly in Park, put the shifter itself in the right spot and then adjust the linkage so the pivot at the end of the shifter linkage passes smoothly and easily in the arm on the trans without pushing the arm out of position. The detentes in the trans are very positive and cannot be misread as you go from gear to gear by hand. It is way better to do this with two people - one in the car and one under the car

when you throw your shifter up into Park from neutral it pushes the trans just a little bit farther into park. If you don't fix this one day it won't start at all. at that point start the car in neutral until you can adjust the shifter

I will just add that this is basically a "free antitheft device."

It requires a simple trick to start it (sometimes...), and only you know it.

So long as you know what's going on, and how to rectify it if it gets worse, it's not a problem. Any young kid wanting to go for a joyride would be completely stymied by it.

I had a couple of cars "back in the day" with misaligned neutral safety switches, that would only start if I pushed the selector just a bit further toward Park.
I never fixed 'em. It's like extra insurance.

Most important. Its not starting in park because its not all the way in park. One day it could just roll away on you if not careful.

So after you park the car. Make sure you can restart it in park position so you know its all the way in before you walk away.

Manually move the shift lever on the trans to the 'P' position. If it starts, it is linkage adjustment. If not, the sw needs adjusting, post #4.

These words he speaks are true.

I'd say ask me how I know but I'm not reliving that.
If you're old enough, you may remember Ford had that exact problem all through the 70s. Some cars would jump into reverse from park, if the driver got out and left the vehicle running. I believe a few people were hurt and maybe even a couple killed because of that. The vehicles would usually end up doing circles in reverse before hitting something and getting stopped.

I don't know who Ford blew off to get out of a real recall, but the only "recall" they had to do was to send out stickers to the owners of all the affected vehicles (There were a LOT. 23 million at the time. The largest "recall" of the time) and place sticker on the dash saying to always set the parking brake, etc, etc. It was pretty stupid. We had a 76 Maverick at the time that was Mama's and I remember that sticker well. Here's an article that tells all about it.

I owned pintos. They put a shield on the front of the Gas tank to stop the ring gear from going through the tank.

I have issues with all 4 manufactures.

Dodge with the death wobble. Fought it from 20k miles . Many trips to the dealer. and added everything they offered some at my expense.
BD steering box brace,
T-bar suspension recall. and only got the nylocks,
Alignments,
Tires,
Dual stabilizer
More ball joints and parts then imaginable

The final repair and fix at 221,000 k mile and hitting a car due to Wobble was. Insurance company Doing the estimate noticed I still had the original steering box. They called the Dealer and all hell broke loose. They replaced the box with an aftermarket. Not Chrysler. Hasn't wobbled at all after that. Also lost the wonder. Since I bought 2 diesel dodges at the same time a single 3500 and a dual 3500. The dually never death wobbled but lost most of the the steering coming back from Nashville last year. So we replaced the box What a difference in driving them now. Do not buy a mopar built box get a rebuilt with upgrade.

Ford Explorer. The throttle pedal is higher then the brake pedal. You catch yourself on the throttle and brake at the same time. An issue that is usually hard to get out of if you start going forward your first reaction is to step on the brake which ultimately applies more throttle. When you release both pedals the car lunges forward . I remember people driving them through store fronts in the past. After owning some I see why.

Also the power circuit for Diagnostics is on a key cycle count. After so many cycles and Once it shuts down you'll never get the engine light off. Youtube it. Been there on two of them . No one stops and starts at more Yard sales then my wife.

Chevy truck two years old every panel rusted but they replaced them all and repainted the truck.

The most durable vehicle I ever owned was my 92- 93 dodge Cummins rams . Boy I wish I never have sold them.

Unless it was a Pinto and it backed into something, then BOOM!.

... Which was a different Ford recall.

Well the Pinto was never a column shift, which is what that "recall" was about......but I get your point. LOL

I'm talking about Ford's OTHER recall. The one where they decided that the $14 (or whatever it was) cost to add a safety barrier between the rear and the gas tank was more than the cost of paying out the lawsuits for the number of their customers who were likely to be immolated after being rear-ended, so they saved their pennies.
