I couldn't find the non-"closet mix" version ( it's more energised ) , but this will suffice .
Any other V.U. fans 'round here ?

Another with Nico.

Here is "Hallelulah", written by Leonard Cohen and performed by John Cale, a member of the VU back in the day. The girl is Edie Sedgwick, an heiress and socialite that descended into the underground world of the "Warhol Factory" in the 1960s. She died of a ****** overdose at the age of 28 in 1971.

WOW !!
Very cool , FISHBREATH .

As a 40 year fan of one of N.Y.'s finest , I must ask : what's your favourite era for V.U. ?
Personally , I like all of the Lou Reed eras ( yes , Doug Yule continued with the name after the 'original' 1970 split ; mixed reviews of "Squeeze" ... haven't heard it myself ... ) .

The 1965-Summer 1968 "Cale Era" is unreal , especially "White Light / White Heat" , my all-time fave album of theirs ( "The Gift" and "I Heard Her Call My Name" are the greatest ! ).

The Fall 1968-c.Early 1969 era was such a radical departure from their early works ; "Murder Mystery" is the exception ! WOW ! What a methedrine-fuelled masterpiece that one is !

" Loaded " ... took me a few listens to dig on ; I've always , however , liked "Sweet Jane" and "Rock and Roll" , with "Who Loves the Sun?" being an excellent , sarcastic , cynical response to the Beatles' "Here Comes the Sun".

I'm glad we share a mutual passion for one of the greatest Avant Garde bands from the 60's .
Thanks for sharing your video choices !

My favorites are definitely pre 1968/1969. The music is so raw and emotion-evoking. They were a big name on the NYC avant garde scene back when R&R and psychedelic music was being played on the radio, but with songs like ******, they never seemed to break into the Top 40 for radio play, if you know what I mean.

The Andy Warhol years ! I wish I could've seen 'em at The Trip in May '66 , but that was 4 years before my time :toothy10: . Even at that , to have been able to see 'em during their Live 1993 re-re-reunion would've been awesome , too ; however , they never played state-side , as Cale and Reed got into it again , thus cancelling a proposed MTV Unplugged appearance .

They had a hell of a time even getting signed . It took -- correct me if I'm wrong -- Tom Wilson to push for them to be on the Verve label , which was a Jazz subsidiary of Atlantic ( again , iirc ) .
The bone-of-contention between Zappa ( whom I LOVE ! ) and the V.U. came to a head in Spring 1966 when "Freak Out" was released on the same label , and months ahead of "...and Nico" .

As far as any radio airtime : I've heard from older fans that some of the FM stations played their songs when they were new . This stands to reason , as FM was 'reserved' for Jazz , Classical , and long-play ( more than 5 minutes duration ) songs , as well as Underground Rock , whereas AM stations were limiting --via the FCC-- songs too under 5 minutes , typically 2:30 - 2:50 . This rule still applies today , but I can't think of a single AM station that even plays music anymore :angry7:
