what is back spacing

i an going from 14" to 15" rims sometime soon and i hear alot of people talk about back spacing, is that an adapter you put on you put on rear drum in my case, then put tire and rim on to keep it from hitting springs, and how do i know what size back spacing to use, thanks this will help clear it up for me

Backspacing, similar to offset, is the distance from the hub mounting surface to the inside lip of the wheel as measured in inches.
