What is going on 8 3/4 axles too long?

I needed to change the axle seal on my 66 barracuda rear end. Put it together and the drivers side axle is sticking out 1/2 inch. Someone modified the backing plates by soldering bolts on it to push out the break pads. I have tried to adjust it in with no success. Do I need a bigger hammer? Shorter axles? Thanks in advance

It’s modified is what you’re saying. How the heck can we tell what is going on when there is not even pictures.

Is the axle seal all the way in to the stop?

I used a seal punch and it sure felt like it went the whole distance

You can measure to verify this length will fit without bottoming on the seal face.....

Check to make sure the retainer isn't cocking and hanging on the five studs.

How long is the axel?

Big bolt pattern or small bolt pattern?

Sounds like a PO used the wrong axle and modified things to make it work..

Did it fit properly before you took it apart? If it did something else is wrong maybe the wrong seal .
