What is the best gear to use when push starting?

Tried to help a neighbor push start his little pickup truck. Tried a couple of times but did not work. Don't know what gear he had it in, but it seemed the truck almost came to an immediate stop as soon as he let out the clutch. In other words, the engine did not spin enough times to get it going.

I always use high gear.

Good idea. Any gear will work but the higher gears work better. Often times first or second will just skid the tires.
