what is this for?

the piece on the left hand side near the top of the firewall close to the fender. what is it? what does it do?

Looks Like an Engine it makes the car go fast sometimes. You may want to send a close-up picture of exactly what your talking about Pete

Top left side of picture is actually the right side of the engine bay. It's the thing above the blower motor on the left of the picture.

I haven't got a clue what it is.

looks like your voltage regulator for your alternator

looks like its emissions crap. delays the vac advance. hard to tell though

Like abodyjoe said....it's an emission control device. You should have (or did) a 2 piece speedo cable with a speed sensor in the middle also. Under certain speeds and conditions, the vacuum spark advance is modified.
