I’m replacing my Alternator and am trying to learn the charging system
67 Barracuda restomod
What type is this in case I need to get a back up
I assume not mechanical like OEM?

It's a constant output regulator. Not my idea of proper but they seem to work.
 
Several brands sold them, and Ma had one look-alike and maybe WAS the same they called and MP part. There is a huge controversy, "race only" etc etc, and the bit about "constant output" or whatever is EXACTLY what a VR is supposed to do. Only caveat with those is make SURE the case is GROUNDED. (I see the paint has been scraped off. Both Blue streak and NAPA sold them at one time. They "should" be a good regulator
 
Why are you replacing alternator? Roundback or square back?
My alternator failed
So i purchased a 90AMP Powermaster round back from Summit. It’s dual field so I grounded the one field to the case
Seems to be working great
13.5 - 14.5
 
I'm sticking a denso off a kubota mini digger on mine. tiny light weight, efficient, 2 wires
