What type of exhaust does your 273 have??? show some photos!!!

I run the factory style Commando/Charger exhaust on all my 273's from mild to wild, factory exhaust manifolds and all. Combinations ran from stock Commando, to 284 duration solid cam with an Offy intake and Holley carb, to "72" 340 heads and cam with a 71 340 intake and TQ. I am also contemplating using a 67 Charger exhaust for the "73" Dart 318 with a mild hop up. The Y pipe exits with a 2 1/2 pipe to a straight thru muffler using a factory 2 1/4 hanger and a 2 1/4 tail pipe into a straight thru resonator. Been running this combination since the early 70's when they were available from many sources. I tried duals with turbo mufflers and saw little to no gain. Straight thru stainless mufflers can be had close to original length and diameters without spending a fortune.

Nice! And I bet it sounds sweet.

I'll have to take another video and post the dimensions of the original muffler and resonator.

Just found this post looking for info on the resonator.

I'm thinking of buying one of the repro ones for a 65 Formula S I'm buying. So you're happy with it ?

I've always loved duals, but that resonator really looks the part, and if it does a good job .......

Like most of the Commando package, it was hard to beat in it's day. The resonator was only part of the system. The Y pipe fed into a 2 1/2 OD piping to the muffler, which was straight through. Then it exited the muffler into a 2 1/4 tail pipe to the straight through resonator. The resonator was needed because it was too loud with 10.5:1 compression and only one through muffler (I had to try it). I also tried custom duals with turbo mufflers, but saw no difference in performance. You can still get all the right hangers also. I am happy with it, it sounds awesome floored running full out. I am even considering putting that system on my son's "73" 318 Dart.

Thanks for replying.

So, I’m considering grabbing one from Classic Industries (or similar) around the $200 mark.
But then I see legendary selling two for very different prices, and I’m wondering what the difference is ?

They reckon one is for Barracuda with 273 …… then for twice the price , one for Barracuda with 4 barrel. Was there a difference ?

I ordered my complete Commando/Charger 273 system from Waldrons. Although not yet installed I am Very happy with the fit and finish of all the components

Spitfire shorty headers to 2.5" downpipe, 2.25" to mufflers, 2" from muffler to rear bumper. Dual Thrush turbos. Was supposed to be 2.25 the whole way but I'm okay with how quiet it is.

They only came on 273 four barrel engines, Dart and Barracuda from 1965-1967. Should be 2 1/4 inlet and straight through. Not sure why they would have 2 different ones? I have original and one from Accurate, Hi-Po Resonator Tip Assembly-ACM-56B . I have ordered exhaust pipes from Waldron's Exhaust and compared them to my originals and they seem perfect. The website seems to be down. Other than the stainless tip, they are a 2 1/4 straight through glass pack 30" long overall.

What are you driving? If you have a 67 Barracuda, you'll have a hell of a time getting a second pipe over the axle any larger than 2 inches. My exhaust guy thought he could run 2.5", but it bangs against the spring when cornering, and has zero clearance on the tank side.

When they say the single exhaust flows better, that's with that huge "Formula S" resonator, which costs as much as a whole exhaust system itself.
Funny story. Back in the 90's back in rural Missouri, one day I somehow stumbled on to a guy that had a really big old Mo. barn, and the walls had shelves way up all 4 sides, full of NOS mufflers. He had probably 25-30 of the Formula S resonators and even hemi muifflers. Back then, those resonators were unobtainium and no one repoped them (which would not have been hard). I bought them all and sold them for like $150 each, with no internet. People about choked when I priced them. Most were thrilled to get one.

Legendary? Accurate LTD? Accurate does sell a small tube 2 barrel set without the stainless resonator. I looked at Classic and got tired of scrolling through page after page of mufflers. Click on "complete systems" and get the same frickin list. Rant over.

Just type in “barracuda resonator”.

on my 66 dart, i run just the resonator, sounds wonderful, had one guy say, never knew single exh could sound so good.

The HP exhaust started in 65 with a straight through muffler. There were too many complaints about excessive noise so they added a low restriction baffled muffler. See this post. 1965 Formula S 5800 miles
