Where to start on my 63 Dart?

-
are the races something ive never seen b4? i,ve always just drove the old ones out with a big screwdriver or chisel and lightly tapped the new one to get it started and set the old race on top of the new one so i could tap the new one in. One thing for sure. Get a chiltons book or service manual to answer the simple questions. will be the best 15 bucks you,ll spend on the car. read thru it and you,ll find things you,ll want to do you,d never think of.

I finally got some pictures taken.

So, is that the correct engine or is it a later one?

EDIT: Here's the pictures of the engine, the rest is in the gallery:

The terminals are chewed up.

Definitely not the original engine. It's a later block with 5 core plugs. Look under the spark plug boot and see if there's a sheet metal tube in there; that'll give you an idea of the age of the cylinder head. It's a bit of a mishmash of parts, though. The valve cover and PCV system is original (and never had a hose going to the air cleaner), but the air cleaner has been swapped for a later design. The exhaust manifold is are later design, as distinguished by their round counterweight, but the intake manifold is from the same era as your car (no EGR fitting). Most of the electronics look like they're the original style.

So what would you suggest doing with it? Try to look for one that is from '63 and pay someone to drop it in, or just go with what I've got? What's that tube that's near the bottom of the block underneath the air cleaner?

I don't know if you saw the pictures in my gallery, but what would you do with the floorpans? They're rusted through in several spots, and I'm not sure about how bad it is underneath the seats.

Hey Harrison, I'm going to be stripping down my 63 GT and I will have a lots of parts to get rid of I could make you a great deal on everything you need. That's the good news, the bad new is I live in MA. a bit of a ride from NC because the stuff is to big to ship. Check out my post in parts for sale and let me know.

A little update...

Going to stick with the engine that's in there. I found someone on Slantsix.org willing to sell me the missing bracket for the radiator. On Monday I'll go to a radiator shop to see if they think the radiator is repairable. If not, I guess I'll have to look for another.

Managed to get a factory service manual for it for $30 off of Ebay.

The guy who I am making a website for says he will go ahead and pay to get the car towed over to the new house on Monday.

EDIT: Tincup, I saw your post earlier. The things that I see I need are the hood letters, and possibly the radiator if this one turns out to be no good. Shipping on the letters would be no problem, but the radiator might be. I'm 16, so there's no way that I could drive up to MA.

The tube on the exhaust manifold is supposed to have a silver flex hose that runs up to the bottom of the air cleaner. It's supposed to help send warm air to the carb when the engine is cold. Hope this helps. Mike

Car is finally here. The wheel freed itself up, but I'm still going to eventually rebuild all of the brakes anyways.

Found something interesting, and probably the source of the later engine: On the rear bumper, it says "Darlington Technical College".

Also found a road flare from 1963 wedged under a bracket in the trunk.

The hood trim was in the trunk as well.

Made a deal with my mom, she's going to pay to get the radiator looked at and fixed, once the bracket comes in.

Hopefully the car will be in running order before I get my license in August.

Hey Harrison glad to hear you got the car home. I've been working on your care package. So far I have the trunk letters, two trunk panel extensions in case you need them, a hood emblem without the insert, a shifter lever with the chrome knob, an ignition switch and some shifter buttons for you. I'm checking around to see what else extra I have you might be able to use. I have some extra headlight trim rings but they are worse than yours. I'll get your package out either Thursday or Friday.

The parts from Dartnewbie came today. Going to try to go to the auto parts store tomorrow to get everything I need, mounting nuts, new bulbs for the instrument cluster.

Noticed something today when removing the cluster: The gas pedal is held on with what appears to be a bent paper clip. Had a laugh when I noticed it. Something else to replace.
