Where To Weigh My Car

-
Well, I reached out to the folks at Cat Scales and was told I could just bring the car in. No appointment needed as the scales are open 24/7. Fee is $12. I will try to get it weighed this evening when the chance of rain goes down. Fortunately there's a scale just 5-10 minutes from my house. I will definitely post the number here.

Wow..grain elevator scales! Great idea. We have NOTHING like that around here. I was going to say maybe a truckstop scale or a scrap yard (they have scales). I resisted the temptation to tell you to get four bathroom scales, jack up the car and place one under each wheel. That would be terrible for me to do that right? :)

I set the corner weights on my racing go kart with one bathroom scale :D You have to keep it level with 3 shims the same height as the scale.
Weigh one corner, log it, change corners and shims, repeat. You only weigh a portion of the total weight at one time so the scale isn't over loaded. It would take a substantial scale to do the same thing with a full size auto

Just got home from the scales. The verdict? 3300lbs. I was kinda bummed out at first. Thought it would be closer to 3100lbs. Then I started thinking about the parts I have on this car. The "baby Dana" 9.25 rear axle which I'm sure is heavier than a 8.75 rear, Moser axles, chromoly driveshaft, trans and pinion yokes, "steel" Flaming River manual box, Quicktime bellhousing, steel police wheels. Now my plan is to lighten it.

I coulda done that with my ex.
One foot on each scale.

I would have said 3100 3200 tops! my BB fastback 4spd is 3440 all steel motor all stock! I weighed mine at scrap yard.

I think the original number for the curb weight on my '72 Swinger was listed as 3200 lbs. A pretty generalized number I would think LA, automatic, PS,PB, and A/C. That would be with skinny steelies and wheel covers and probably the 7 1/4 rear diff. I'm sure that I must have taken it across the truck scale at the rock farm once or twice but don't recall the number.

Weighed my 27560R15 BFG radial on 15 X 7 police wheel. Sumbitch is 60lbs! Bucket seats, aluminum master cylinder and lighter wheels are in my future.

Your local landfill

If they are not busy, the highway commercial vehicle enforcement facility (highway scales)

I have seen roadside scales in Oregon that are on all the time, even when the police isn't flagging vehicles in.

As mentioned, bathroom scales, typical digital scale goes to 300, you would need a 4:1 lever (4' plank, wheel set 3' from scale).
I did this with a body shell, put the whole car on block the height of the scale assembly and just moved the one scale around.
If you are careful in placing the car on the scales this could probably be more accurate than drive on scales with their 20lb increments.

I'm gonna try another scale just to get a second opinion. This is really bothering me. Lol.

A 67 up a-body car will be in that ballpark. Yes all that stuff adds up.
This is a little old, but there is a table of wheel and tire weights here, just scroll a little further down.

And a list of some car weights from '66 As to some E bodies at the bottom of this page:

I was looking at Speedway Motors I think it was the other day and they had the weights of the various wheels listed. As far as steelies go Bart Racing is lighter than others, but they aren't DOT approved. Not that a LEO would ever inspect them, but those tire shop people might do some squawking. Just have to convince them they are mounting them for the dirt track racer .

Something else to think on. When you go to the truck scale to weigh the beasties, weigh the front axle, weigh the total car, weigh the rear axle. Handy info for weight distribution. If the scale is in ground with some extra room around the entry and exit, weigh it one tire at a time for corner weights. Since most truck scales are used for commercial purposes they are fairly accurate and checked by government agencies at least annually.

If you know any sort track racers they will know somebody with scales that will give you brake down for weight on each corner, front to back etc. We used four grain scales to weight my brothers modified.
