Hey folks I'm new to the forum. I just purchased a 1973 Dodge Dart Sport and I'm really excited about it. There needs to be some work done to it but it runs, and for $1000, I'd say it was a steal.

Thing is, I'm not sure which engine I'm working with. I see nothing printed on the block or sides. Can anyone help me out?

I apologize if this has already been posted.

There are casting numbers on the block, look under the intake/exhaust manifold. It will look like this:

(It's right between the first and second freeze plugs, from left to right) This is an earlier block show, but it will still be close to the same location.

Once you find that number, use this chart to identify it:

CASTING # C.I.D.
2202843 170
2205630 170
2264478 170
2463230 170
--- 198
2202857 225
2205528 225
2463430 225
2806830 225

if the block hasn't been decked it will also say on the little pad right above the alternator mount on the passenger side deck surface. u can read it with the head on

BTW WTF is that out of??? and is that a core plug above the timing cover??

OK to the original Poster. Your 73 engine is either a 198 or 225. As suggested look under #1 plug facing the sky and clean off the 1/2 inch by 3 inch pad on the deck surface. Should be 1 or 2 letters then 198 or 225.
To Rusty Dusty this is a pre 1967 block.

I think what he was referring to was the OP's car. No other slants in '73 than a 225.
