20 years ago I bought an 8 3/4 rear end for my 72 Dart, painted it and put it in the corner of my dad’s garage. After all these years the car is nearing completion. Still a ways to go but I am getting everything ready for final assembly. The rear end came without any drums or hardware. Only the backing plate. I need to buy all the things…wheel cylinders, hardware, shoes, drums. I do not know which size I am supposed to buy and I am not 100% sure which year/model car the rear end came from. It was from an a-body, its 8 3/4 with SBP and has 3.55’s. That’s about all I know.

So, can anyone tell me. Were SBP 8 3/4 all the same size drums? Can anyone tell me the size I need? Is there a way I can tell based on the backing plate? Thanks in advance.

As far as IDing the year, you can narrow it down by the vent/brake tee location-'69ish and earlier had it up on the center section, '70 and later had it further out on the axle tube.
All 8.75s had 10x1.75" brakes. Drum style changed through the years, but are all 10" and are all interchangeable.
The self-adjuster hardware changed in '69, but is again interchangeable (as a system). The later style is generally agreed to be the better of the two.

A Member here, MobileParts should have everything you need.
I have his number. I will send you a message.

Assuming it is really from an A-Body with the original 10"x 1.75" backing plates, the only new manufacture drums available are Centric #123.63044. They are out of stock at Rock Auto and Summit, but Amazon is showing them for $79.99. A little pricey, but probably includes shipping with Prime. These are Chinese made, but they're pretty nice. For a long time there were none available. These have been available off and on for the past few years. Maybe heading to unavailable again.
You can also check on FABO for good used drums. They pop up, or put up a wanted to buy ad.

Shoes, adjusters, and hardware are all available at Rock Auto and other places. As Professor Fate suggested, the '69 and up adjusters are improved over the earlier pieces.
The parking brake lever, strut and spring are not available new. Well, sometimes the spring shows up in hardware kits, but I haven't seen one lately.
Look in for sale here on FABO, ebay, etc.

Maybe a good time to upgrade to 4 1/2" bolt pattern. Minimal cost difference since you need all the stuff anyway.

Nah. I’ll stick to SBP. I don’t want BBP on rear and SBP on front. Front is already set, built and ready. Already have wheels too.

Thanks. I bought hardware kit earlier from RA. I’ll grab these drums and look for the last few pieces (PB lever, strut and spring).

Do you have left hand lug studs on the left side?

Keep it OE!

"Lefty tighty, right loosy" doesn't really flow off the toung, but I'll keep my lefty's as long as I can!

Up to you. There is a reason that the factory changed both the bolt pattern ( the larger pattern has less stress on the wheel center) original used with a 13" sized rim.
And the l/h, r/h stud setup was not used in 1972. 7/16" rh only. Torque to 55 ft lbs.
How much of the rest of the car is "correct"?

If you need wheel cylinders, I have new, U.S. made Wagners with the small 7/8" pistons. They help with front / rear brake bias to prevent rear lockup. I need to get $20 including shipping for a pair.
If you want them, send me a PM.

My original '70 Swinger still has the LHT studs on the driver's side. I'm in the tire shop to yell in their ears to make sure they get it right(left). It usually takes a question from the gray-haired ponytailed guy before they try it.

I don't think '72 had LHT. I've read 1970 was the last year.

edit: I guess depending on the year of the rear axle, It may have LHT. I'll take a look this weekend.

Should have a "L" stamped into the end of the stud.

LHT was just another way to narrow down the year of the rear ( not conclusive because they could have been switched or added at some point, but who in their right mind would add LHT? Oh wait I would)

LHT is just a cool factor thing for me.

No "L" on my rear lug studs
