We now have two Saginaw pumps to choose from. One is referred to as the oval neck unit and as I understand it was used from 69-72 and the other is referred to as the box style unit and t was used from 69 - 74.

Does anyone know if both units perform equally?
If one unit is better than the other which one is it?

Here are the two Saginaw pumps for review:

Same guts, same rebuild kits.

Use the oval one on the left with that keyway spoke pulley and keyway pump.

The box reservoir can was not used before 1972 for sure.

I use a oval can pump on the left and interchange them directly between those two brackets 68-69 (maybe 67?) cast iron brackets and the 70-up aluminum water pump with those early 70's brackets. But you must swap the pulleys. I know the early spoke pulley is keyway'd. Can't remember if that solid pulley is Keyway or not.

I have those 70-up brackets on the right on my new motor with aluminum water pump.

I believe the different pulley's position the belt differently fore and aft. And there are keyway pulleys and pumps, and non keyway pulleys and pumps.

This is the pump. It will fit both oval and square cans. That can is only a looks thing and determines direction and length of the return hose line. They will interchange IF the return line hose nipple is the same (or generally the same)
