Which will get to the end of 1/4 the quickest

-
I was shifting at 6000.
Where would you suggest I shift it at?
And which way would you go with the gearing?

[I do have a set of 4:56 and 4:88 both sure grips. That would surely get it screaming]

I saw my brother at a superbowl party last night and talked to him about the Aspen I mentioned earlier. The only difference thats obvious in your combo and his is the compression, he's at 12.5 with some Ross pistons and you're at 11.1 with possible TRW's. The slick on his car is 28 inches tall and he shifts at 6000 and goes through the traps at 6000-6100 at 122mph on average. The gear is a 4.10 like you already have in your car. The only thing we dont know is the weight of ur ride and unless its unusually heavy I would start looking into the tune up for the loss of MPH and ET. Looking at some calculations at that speed and rpm you should have a 4.30 or higher in the car. The speed and mph you have given us should show a 5500 trap RPM. Too much converter slippage??? Who's it made by and what condition is it in?

I'd take your shift point up to 6500 and go with 4.30 gears..

what does your car weight??..mines 3450 with me in it...

I don't know the weight.
I was thinking tranny or converter slippage also.
Or the tach is wacked and not reading correctly.
The converter is an ATI tight.
I should send it out and have it checked over.

I would have the converter checked also especially if it hasnt been in a while or you just dont know its history. Good converter people will get the whole combo from you including the weight before wroking on it so take the car to a scrap yard or moving company and get a general weight on their scales. Try several tachs if you but just get a good one from a buddy on a known car for reliability.

340srule suggested a 4.30 gear but I'm not sure that was one or your original choices. A 4.56 will work with a 28 inch tall tire and 6500 is still safe for a well put together bottom end even with the TRW's.

Based off a pretty reliable calculation with a 4.56 gear and 28 inch tall tire to to attain 120mph which would genarally put you in the low 11's high 10's 6500 would be the approximate trap rpm.

The guy I bought the converter from is looking for the paper work, so maybe I'll send it out to have it tuned up.
Hopefully this year I'll catch the scale at LVD open and I'll get a handel on the weight of the car. I've been thinking about really lightening the car, maybe a glass nose and doors.

Light is good! The only reason my car runs as good as it does with a basically stock 340 is cause its only 2900lbs.

Check out the mopar speed secrets book and find a motor as close to the builds mentioned and you will see close to what they will run.Chrysler engineers spent a lot of time and money compiling this book.

How did you get the car down to 2900lb ?

Hmmm....lets see
Fiberglass hood
fiberglass front bumper and brackets
aluminum radiator with electric fans
wilwood disc brakes
weld pro stars
no wipers
no heater
904 instead of 727
two fiberglass front buckets
removed all of the sunroof guts and had a fiberglass insert made
removed door braces
drilled holes in all non load bearing concealed panels
removed all undercoating
spool instead of limited slip
rifle drilled axles(yes i know unsafe)
aluminum fuel cell(18 gallon)

it was completely stock witha 4 speed and weighed 3450 before I started and ended up 2900.

Hmmm....lets see
Fiberglass hood Got that with dual scoop
fiberglass front bumper and brackets Over the summer I put one on,but used just the single steel bracket
aluminum radiator with electric fans Stock Radiator, with elec and manual fan.
wilwood disc brakes Stock disk up front, wilwood disk in back
weld pro stars weld drag lite's
no wipers Just started taking them off yesterday, have to make a cover for the hole where the motor is.
no heater No heater here either
904 instead of 727 Running 727 behind the BigBlock
two fiberglass front buckets Single bucket, original rear seat
removed all of the sunroof guts and had a fiberglass insert made Non sunroof car
removed door braces doesn't have the braces the newer ones have
drilled holes in all non load bearing concealed panels
removed all undercoating still have some of that
spool instead of limited slip Spool here also
rifle drilled axles(yes i know unsafe) replaceed cut and resplined axles with mosers
aluminum fuel cell(18 gallon) 10 gal.(I think) plastic fuel cell with float and sending unit.

it was completely stock witha 4 speed and weighed 3450 before I started and ended up 2900.

I had the stock front disc brakes also and the wilwoods were still 38lbs a side. Sounds like the car with the big block should be in the 3100-3200lb range. When you put on the glass hood did you removed the springs and arms? and the hood latch assembly? My car also has a back seat but just a standard one not the original foldown, i have a radio and two speakers in my car do you? if you do do ya need it?

Hood was already on the car and all the hinges, latches and arms are gone.
Mine is just a normal rear seat also. The radio is still in the car, but I'm not sure about speakers. I don't ever remember turning it on. Might be a good thing to hook up, so I can hear the track announcer. I'll have to go check. I wonder if the battery has power. I was having issues with bad batteries, this one I hope is a better one. Yes it is in the trunk.

Does your car have a roll cage?
Not now it had a mild steel 6 point but when I slowed the car down by taking out the R block stroker i took out the bar. I never thought it would run this good so I didnt think I'd need it. The mild steel 6 point was over 100lbs so go with chrome moly if you dont have one yet.
Does your car have a charging system? or does it run on battery only?

My car is caged. It has a 12pt that ties into the front. A bit of overkill, but I kinda like my family. It is mild steel.
I do have the alternator still charging the battery.

Wow 12 point! that is a lot but a lot of piece of mind too. I think with the new Et Streets my car may drop a tenth or two into the 11.80's but I have no plans of going faster. I go to the drag strip very little, havent been in two years. I dont street race cause it would like kinda silly if a cop got caught streetracing and costly cause I might lose my job!

Did you ever get a hold of that converter info?

Still waiting on the converter info. I had written to them a while ago, trying to get a price to tweak it, and got no response.
So your car is street driven? Mines not. I figure I would have to give NYSDMV around $500 just in tax. I also didn't buy the car to drive on the street, although I have had thoughts of registering it and driving it. Not sure if the kids car seats will fit in behind the cage.
I do want to get a new set of slicks for it and get the DOT tires off.
I did just run out and pulled the wiper motor out. Just trying to figure out if I can get the arms off without breaking the retainers. The plastic ones. Whay didn't they use the metal retainer and wavy washer like the motor.
As for the radio, It has had had the speaker wire cut, and I forgot, there is no antenna, but the power wire is still connected. and the speaker is there. I'll try and get the radio out in a little bit, gonna be interesting, the one bar from the cage crosses right in front of it, and I'm not sure I can get the knobs off. My switch panel also sits right in front of it.
