Hey guys,

i read somewhere that you cant use the front and rear window trim from a vinyl roof car on a non vinyl roof car and visa versa...is this true? My scamp used to have a vinyl roof, but i ripped er off and was planning on keeping it that way and reusing the stock front and rear window trim...now im worried:-?....can anyone clarify this for me?

thanks
matthew

It may be a bit "loose", so you might have to gently bend the edges together. Otherwise, should work.

damn i never even thought of this before...have you guys ever actually done this? using the vinyl roof trim on a non vinyl roofed car?

My duster used to have a vinyl roof and I got rid of it. I am using same drip rail trim, just used 3m two sided tape behind it to help hold it tight and take up the space.

so im guessing the trim will stretch then? will i be able to bend it back like 3404speed said, or do i have to use the two sided tape...have any pics? anyone else actually done this for the front and rear window trim (I guess im going to have to do the drip rail trim as well too god dangit)

worked in a bodyshop for a while, would do this if we pulled off the top and painted it, instead of replacing the vinyl. Usually works8)

you refering to the bending it back to fit or using the two sided tape?

The vynil is hardly as thick as a credit card. The clips that hold the window trim will give that much. The driprail trim might be sprung just a tad from the vynil under it but it may snap right on without any adjustment too. If your seriously worried about it ding the hidden edge every foot or so before installing.

Used the old trim on my dart with no vinyl and its fine.

alright cool guys thanks for the suggestions...i was just a little worried that it was one more thing i would be running into as a slight problem upon reassembly...doesnt hurt to check things like this...thanks! ill just have to see what happens when i go back to do it

While we're on the subject, how do you remove it, seems really tight and prone to getting messed up if you pry on it too much?

I use a very small pic to remove the corner piece first, then work the pic in uner the trim on the vynil top side. Once a little of it is lifted up and over and comming off I can continue along using my fingers. It sort of twists or rolls off. Hard to describe.
If i did make any tool scars they are hidden under that corner piece.

Here is my take on the subject. I am about to put a vinyl roof on a car that didn't have one and here it what I am going to do. (just note, I haven't done this yet, but it makes sense to me) I think the key to fitting is the location of trim is the location of the clips.
On a vinyl top car the clips mount on top of the vinyl, which also raises the clip up the thickness of the vinyl (the clips bottom out in the window "well"). So I think the key is to drill new holes for the clips when changing for vinyl to non-vinyl or the other way around.
Again this is just my theory which I will be testing in the next few weeks.....

If I were taking the windows out for rust repairs and replacing broken clips, I would clean the old vynil and adhesive off the fence.
I dont quite understand your "drill new holes" though. The vynil goes behind the clip and screw but not bellow the clip. Factory razored the excess material just above the inside corner.

The vinyl goes behind and underneath the clip. So the holes are likely too high (if you are removing the trim). The clips on my car bottom out in the inside corner.

Ok I wont argue or run around in the yard snapping pics over .010
Cheers
