So, did 70 340's come with a windage tray from the factory? Pulled my pan and was surprised to see one already there.

Especially, sisnce I just picked one up :toothy10:.

yes...340s came with windage tray from factory.

Keeps the extra oil slinging and splashing around off the crank, it also adds some horsepower.

keeps the oil from wrapping itself around the crank cause the windage (spinning of the crank)...

so it's kind of like a baffle that prevents the oil in the pan from directly shooting up to the crank? Sorry, I'm just trying to visualize this to have a better understanding..

Dumb question ... What exactly does a windage tray do ??

That`s not a dumb question. 66 said it well, the windage tray prevents oil from being blown all over the crank, creating friction ,and robbing horsepower from the engine. Windage is the disturbance of the air created by the crankshaft spinning in the crankcase. That air lifts oil out of the pan and spews it all over the crank. You can imagine how much oil could be drawn out of the pan when a crankshaft is spinning 5000 rpm just inches from it. The windage tray blocks that transfer of oil from the pan to the crank via windage.

Thanks guys for taking the time .. I totally get it now..

It also helps remove oil that's being sprayed from the crank and directs it to the sump.

Thanks for the answers. Got a clearer understanding of windage too! Guess I'll keep the one I just bought for the stroker I want to build in a few years.

Hey WyKev -
Keep in mind that a future 'stroker' motor will have a longer crank throw, moving the big end of the rod closer to both the block sidewall and to the windage tray.
You may have to clearance the bottom of the block to clear the big ends of the rods/rodbolts. You may have to also space the windage tray away from the crank due to the longer crank throw in order to clear the big ends of the rods/rodbolts.

Also stops the oil in the tray from foaming up due to the crank causing turbulance. Just oil makes it up into the pickup..not air.
