I don't know much about windage trays, but I was thinking about using one in a la 360. Somebody said something about the distance from the crack to the tray being to close and causing turbulence in the oil which led to air bubbles in the oil,is this true? If so can / how can it be corrected.

I have been running one in a 360la for years. I put one washer under it and slightly bent it to clear the crankshaft. Been spinning it up to 6500 rpms and all of the rods are still in it.

You put the washer between the main cap bolt and the windage tray right

Yes. Put the special main bolts in and torque it to spec. Put one washer on each, then the tray, then the other washer and then the bolt that holds the tray on. They came with the Mopar windage try kit I got. That is what the extra washers are for if you get it from Mopar.

Cool, thanks

You don't use the washers with a 340 or 360. The trays work fine as is. They came OEM on all 340's and HP 360's. The washers were used on 273's and 318's to use the longer 340/360 special main bolts.

Marine engines as well...

It depends on what you are building and how you are going to use it. I put a upper and lower tray on my 273 because I could but I doubt if it added 10 horsepower.

What’s the upper tray??? Are you talking about a crank scraper or a windage tray???

It was a intake valley pan.

I've Never built an engine without one. Just cheap insurance, and some free ponys up top side of the band... the MP units for a B engine were 20 bucks on the shelf at Automotive Engineering when I built my first one..

LOL…no but I’ve never heard of a valley tray called a windage tray. I’m sheltered like that.
Splitting hairs. I called it a tray and not a pan. Don't want to confuse it with a big block valley pan. Mondello calls theirs a valley tray For Olds engines. Kevco calls theirs a lifter valley baffle. All different words for the same thing.

Wow! You guys live in a cave?
Nah! I’ve used them before. Had to do a bit of grinding around the push rods to make it fit. Then the cut out on the edges to make it sit better. I could just “feel the power!”
Lol! Made me happy.!
The 273 I had Larry’s Automotive machine shop build me that made 317hp at 6k and just over 350hp at 8k ( we left the rev at 6k due to the obnoxious valve spring pressure required) anyhow- they did not install a windage tray as they worried about oil not draining back fast enough and the car starving for oil at higher rpms. Stock pan so a larger pan may prevent that. Their words not mine. I’ve always used them until this engine.

I'm fixing to install a MP tray on a 5.9 Magnum. So I don't use washers between the tray and main bolts, right?

Good numbers out of a 273

It was a stretch Mike. I decided to remove the heavy springs for longevity. Expected to only last 40k now. With the triple springs it was like 20k. Way to little for a street driven car. The whole windage tray was also a surprise. I would had never thought that a windage try had a down side. But when you look at how it fits tight and dependent on the openings, oil above the tray waiting to drain will add friction. On a 340 - a lot more HP so maybe we don’t worry about it? Only a dyno would know for sure. Sounds like an episode of “ENGINE MASTERS- sponsored by Amisoil.”
