Hello everyone,

I"m at the point now with my project (72 340 Duster) to install a new windshield and rear window, Just a simple stupid Question. What windshield sealant should I use. I"ve search all different kinds and reviews. I come up with different ones to use. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,

I think originally they used butyl-rubber, but I think nowadays they use a polyurethane sealant, which is supposed to be superior. At least that's what I've heard.

I used permatex windshield gasket sealant just inside the gasket to pinch weld with a strip of butyl tape across the bottom center..on my 67 valiant that is.

Whatever you use, good luck and I hope it doesn't leak on you.

From what I was told by a Mopar guru & my glass guy, silicone doesn't adhere to glass well & there for won't give you a good seal, among a couple other reasons I just can't recall right now. Hope this helps.
Why? Please explain
Thanks

I must disagree! Large "frameless" fish tanks are made using only glass and silicone sealant -- these can hold hundreds of gallons of water

Completely different situation. Windshields suffer huge temperature changes, and are subject to vibration and shock.

The answer? "I don't know". I made the mistakes of letting "professionals" install mine and it's starting to look like one or both (windshield, rear glass) are going to have to come back out.

Use liquid butyl....the urethane stuff dries to hard, the butyl stays soft and allows the glass and body to somewhat move independently of each other and maintain the seal, the urethane will eventually leak. Unless your car never sees water than use whatever you want!

Might need some between glass and seal too. The seals/gasket are not quite as perfect as the original ones.
Mine was good for a couple rains...then once is had to temp changes...it leaked the next rain...between the glass n seal at the lower...so I preyed back the seal some and shot a thin bead of sealant in and no more leaks. Use it liberally in other words.
Permatex windshield sealant.
