my head is spinning...prev owner totally abused this car to death. The wiring is a nightmare.

none of my cluster gauges work except alternator and speedometer.

Turn signals dont work

Car was originally collumn shift, it was converted to a B&M on the floor. Nop backup lights, no neutral safety switch.



I wired up the dash cluster as best as i could, i think i wired up the radio and heater controls right as well. No idea how to wire the under dash speaker.


i have a ton of leftover plugs that seem to go to nothing?!?!??!?

please help me identify what the hell all these extra plugs are...im about ready to junk the car im so disgusted with this.

Mine was that bad i got rid of the headache and rewired it. Also it might help to know the year and model of the car.
 
duhh...im an idiot... 1970 dodge dart, but it has a 72 styled dash and cluster.

Get the DIAGRAMS for both. Then you get to interpret.

The color codes on the diagrams will help, and they will show the plug types too. Find the component, follow the pretty lines to the plug, Chase same in the harness.

I.e. follow oil light wire on '72 diagram to it's plug, follow the oil pressure sender on the 70 diagram, and they gotta meet in the middle. Pick one thing at a time.
 
Fwiw, I laminated the wiring diagram for my car, and all the changes I've made to it, and keep it in the glove box.

Does anyone make a brand new dash harness with all the stuff labled as to where its supposed to go?
 
4th from the top is for signal flasher, 7th pic is for head light switch and emergency flasher, I think. Yellow wiring is for door switches and courtesy lighting.
 
I make my own harnesses. My advice is definitely rip everything out and start over. Sorry I can't help you directly
 
I would be "tempted" to start over. You can buy used harnesses and rework them, you can buy repops, you can buy "almost stock" aftermarket from a few places, or just plain aftermarket like EZwire, and others..........BUT

START BY getting yourself a FACTORY service manual, the RIGHT one for the year. There are lots of them, but a few gaps, over at MyMopar.

Some of them there came from the efforts of the guys on here

Service manuals.......Dodge or Plymouth, does not matter except for Ralleye dash

ALSO there at same site they have simplified AFTERMARKET wiring diagrams. These are sometimes helpful but ARE NOT COMPLETE that is some options are left out, and some connectors not clear or missing

ALSO...for several years THERE IS A MISTAKE in the factory manuals concerning the HORN wire (green/black) and the yellow START circuit where they go through the bulkhead connector. The car is "correct" because "it works"
 
the car is a 1970, the dash frame and gauge clusters are from a 72
 
pic 3 is the speaker wires,pic 4 is for the hazard flasher,pic 5 is for the speedo, the 2 yellows are for the door jamb switch,the cluster of plugs is for the ignition switch for 67-9 and turn signal flasher. What year is your car?

so it sounds like a need a completely new wiring harness cuz the one in it has stuff for a 67-69?
 
You have to be careful mixing/ matching different year harnesses. There were minor changes. You simply have to sit down with the shop manual (MyMopar) and do a line-by-line continuity check Then there's "little" options like the key-in buzzer, map light, stuff like that, and in 74 or thereabouts, the dreaded seat belt interlock. And there's stuff "you never see". The incredibly stupid vacuum switch/ turn sig warning light setup "fuel miser" whatever it's called. And there was something called a "New York horn" Evidently NYC had a lower sound level tolerance on horns.
 
im mainly just wanting the main functions to work...turn signals, fuel level gauge, speedometer, and brake lights....so confusing
 
Just take each circuit separately. We can step you through it. Example, The TS switch is not that hard, you have the following terminals:

INTO the the column TS switch, you have TS flasher and hazard flasher, as well as switched brake light power..

None of that does anything until activated. If the switch is centered, the brake light power is routed through and out the switch to both rear TS bulbs

OUT of the switch is left and right front turn, and left and right rear turn. The front turn wiring branches off to feed the cluster turn sig indicator lamps

Ignition switch: Again, just separate what is what. You have main battery going IN

Coming out you have IGN1 which is hot only in run, and IGN2 which is only hot in start

You have the start trigger going to the start relay,

and you have the accessory output which feeds down to the accessory buss in the fuse panel.

You must be careful because NONE of the ignition switch/ ammeter/ headlight wiring is fused, except only by the fuse link. The headlights have a breaker in the switch

The headlight switch:

You have unfused main power coming in feed ONLY the headlight circuit. In and out of the light switch, then to the dimmer, where it splits in two outputs for hi and lo

Tail/ park, and dash light power goes INTO the light switch from the tail fuse. Instrument lamp power comes through the twist lamp dimmer, and down to the inst fuse in the fuse panel. THIS FUSE then is an oddity. From that fuse, all cluster illumination comes out on ORANGE wiring

It's really hard to tell by pics but that plug may be for the wiper switch. Does your harness have plugs for the column? It is white,thin and holds 5 or 6 wires? There should also be a sky blue the same size.
 
Makes you wonder HOW they get so bad. WHO the heck did that to that poor car? WOW
 
can anyone link me to some brand new harnesses? all i can find is one and its like 900$
