With or with out a hood scoop?

I cut the diamond out of the hood. Had to drill holes in the support arms for the studs. Also used a 9 inch round, 5 inch tall air filter to fit up in the cutout.

you can also get a drop base so you can put in a carb spacer.

I would not cut that hood up.

I forgot to mention, I cut my hood to fit a full 14x3" air cleaner with at least 1/4"-1/2" clearance all around so I probably took more bracing out than you did. Particularly at the very back, I had to cut into the bracing there for clearance and I think that's what really made it more flimsy.

That is a good way to go, and not cut my hood. And buy another hood. Thanks you guys for the input, you helped me to see the light about my hood, I would probably have regret it cutting this hood after doing it.

I boxed mine in at the back. Before that , it was somewhat "fluttery".

Nice, yup that's exactly what I need to do with mine.

Having owed a 74 without the twin snorkel and then adding one from my totaled 73 Dart sport it would make the front of the car "pop." In fact, I did mine differently and painted it to the color of the car. Let me see if I can find a picture of it. Most people don't do that..... Just a different way and opinion....

all the input is, thank you all, your $.02 it is consistent with the majority of what would be the right thing to do. You guys helped me see the value of the hood and paint that is in perfect condition, I almost did it. But Don’t cut, and buy another hood is what I’m going to do.

When a company doesn’t do the right thing, I’ve always had to get in touch with a regional manager or owner and they have the horsepower to make it right. Somebody at the top cares about the business name and customer satisfaction.

The reason that I’m thinking about a hood scoop is I want to put a spacer under my carburetor. I have a Edelbrock air gap intake manifold with a 750 Holley carb. and that will not clear the hood, Or it will be very close to touching the hood.

Forget the spacer.
You'll never measure a difference in first gear, and probably never below 65 mph either.
I ran a 750DP on the AG on my 367 on the 70 Duster K in my 68 Barracuda;
with a factory air cleaner from a 69 Barracuda. It did not rub, even with a .25 insulator I installed for insurance against percolation. Just make sure your carb stud is as short as possible.
Eventually I did cut a hole in my hood, sealed it to the carb, and mounted an oval Mr-Gasket aluminum filter housing to the hood, between the strakes. This to get fresh air straight down the airhorn. Was it worth it? Oh yeah, it spins the tires at least 20 mph further now,lol.

1st off beautiful car, love the color . . .I would put either a 6 pack or duel snorkal scoop on it for sure. If it was all stock or had ralley wheels all around I could see leaving the flat hood. Being that you have more of a drag set up with skinnes and cal tracs hanging down I would continue down that road and put a scoop on it with a tall air cleaner.

That's the right idea. My 72' Dodge Sportsman Royal is that color (Jade Green, lower; Top half, white). Nice car as is.

For the record, I like your hood as-is. Definitely don't cut that one.

I was very happy with my AAR hood, but that was 10 years ago. I have heard good things about Glasstek.

Be aware that you'll have to pull the fenders and remove the hood springs from the hinges - even "weakened" springs will warp the glass hood over time. I use a prop rod now. You also need to remove the extra piece of steel that the spring mounts to, or the rattles will drive you crazy. I didn't - and it does! One day when I feel ambitious, I'll pull the fenders and remedy that. Save your parts!

Once you drive it with a Snorkel scoop from a 72/73 Dodge you will sell your original hood if you get another. So just put the scoop on your hood.
But do it right. You'll need to put the five holes in the inner as the 73 dart sport or 72 Demon has and stamp the Air holes in the hood

I mounted the hood scoop back Farther because of the body line in the hood on a 71 and I kept it away from the 340 WEDGE decal. You should be OK with it in the original inner locations for the holes. The 73 to 76 Dusters also look good with the 73 Dart sport style hood treatment with the split black out.

Why do want to install a spacer? The only real reason to modify your hood would be performance or space problems. Spacers will help reduce carb boil and increase fuel vaporization. Some say they will increase HP slightly. Hedmans makes a spacer with angled slots in the bore which creates a swirl of the fuel vapor.

Your car looks perfect as is but since you asked, my opinion would be to NOT CUT that steel hood. Buy an aftermarket fiberglass hood for weight savings & mount whichever studded scoop makes you giddy. Paint the new hood/scoop to match the car or black it out. It really comes down to your preference. My vote would be for Glasstek stuff currently.
