My father like many veterans just didn't talk about the war. Sadly he passed without telling me much at all. How do I go about putting the pieces together? Is there a site like Ancestry for veterans records?

You can request a coy of his records from the branch he served in more info the better or a service number is the best. Did that for mine was interesting.

I tried to get my dads records from my congressman for a Military Troop Banner. His staff dropped the ball. My sister ended up finding his discharge papers from WWII.

I used that link above pretty painless actually think I needed a coy of his death certificate also.

Not trying to hijack, but my Grammas(still alive at 97), half brother served in the Navy and also served in an Apollo recovery mission.
Any suggestions to track down info? Both myself and Gramma are Canadian, so it may be difficult. His wife sold everything when he passed away.
Thanks sorry for hijack.

Steve I would think it would be the same. A lot of people moved after the war.

Get yourself an SF180. You can get it off the net and print it out. The form is self explanatory. There are some specific item you need to state on the form. Also, did your dad ever file a VA claim? If so VA will have his medical records. Shoot me a PM And I’ll give you mu number. I can go over the form with you.

Thanks. I just mailed the form and looking forward to getting some more information.

Good luck with your search. Many records were destroyed in a fire in St. Louis in 1973. I hope those you seek were not.

Please let us know how this goes. I'm looking for details on the types of planes my dad piloted in WWII and where he was stationed

The records lost in the 1973 fire were mainly those of Army and Air Force personnel, however a few Navy and Marine Corps personnel records which were temporarily in the affected area were also destroyed. Amongst them were some of my own records from first enlistment which were under review priour to my subsequent reenlistment.

When I looked up the reference links above, I was surprised to find that mention of the anti-war protestors who started this fire have apparently been scrubbed from official government accounts. Very odd. And troubling, as it was common knowledge at the time.

Hope this helps,

Harry
