XE282S in my 408??? Big enough or bigger?

-
Im more concerned with the correct stall now. Gears not an issue. I will try the 3.91s and then 3.55, and 3.23s to see what I like the best. I own all the 3rd members already so that is just a quick swap.

I had Ultimate Converter Concepts build a custom converter for my car recently. The difference between a good converter and the junk I used to have in there was night and day; dramatically more torque, better idle, less RPMs out on the highway, like a stock converter during light throttle, step on it and engine is in max torque immediately every time. Money well spent wish I would have done it sooner. Don't buy a cheap converter that ends up holding your engine back.

What stall did you end up with?

Your rear gear ratio plays a big part in the stall speed of your converter. If you were to order a converter with a 3000rpm stall for 3.9 gears it would most likely be over 4000rpm with 3.23 gears. The recommendation from edge racing converters for that cam in my sons 410 with 2.92 gears was a 3000rpm stall it works really well. He stuck with 2.92 gears as the car spends quite a bit of time on the highway at 70mph for long distances. Based on his combo which is very similar to yours i would be thinking 3.23 or 3.55 gears depending on what you use the car for and a 3000rpm stall, custom built for those gears.

I run that cam in my 360 with 11.25 CR, i think in your 408 it would be on the mild side, its pretty mild on my 360 but the 11.25cr helps i have 205 cranking psi so i could go much larger on my little motor.

I have that cam in my 408. I run 3.55 rear gears with a 9.5 inch torque converter with 3200 stall. I mainly street drive it and it works good. When i was calling around on a converter everyone was between 3200-3500 stall. I am running 255-60-15 rear tires.

It flashes to 3400 RPM when I step on it. But cruising around town it acts like a stock converter. A converter is one area where you want to spend some money. You can't beat a custom converter made exactly for your combination.

I forgot about my Crane LA CCH 312-2 .528/.552 242/252 @ .050 Hydrolic cam. Wonder if that would be better in the stroker. Im Hoping my income tax wont kill me and I can just bite the bullet and go solid roller. Plan on using what I already own for now.

I'm not familiar with that Crane cam but the lift and dur. at .050 looks good for a mild stroker. Pretty close to the 282XE specs. but it's a hyd. so it may not make quite as much power.

AI fired a 260@ 050,106 Comp flat tappet,in my 408.Actually had 6" of vacuum,on break in.That Crane,nice grind,should be mellow.Solids ,really work better,for torque here.

XE-282s in my 3200# 408/904/3500stall/3.91 dart ran 11.90's at 5800' altitude and was streetable. 1.62 60' time says it had some torque too.

I love that cam and I've used it a few times. Makes about 450hp, flat torque curve provided the heads work.
