My thought at the time of buttoning up my Magnum swap was to keep it modest. The ~300hp motor just didn't warrant a loud exhaust and I liked the idea that at least with the hood closed, the car seemed totally stock. So I went with an inexpensive stock style muffler

Well...that has since become boring. I don't regret the subtle exhaust note but a little bit more noise and a less performance-restricting system is probably a better choice, especially since I spent the money on the headers. :D .

What are you running on your Magnum now? Are you happy with the sound? Did they free up any horses?

Dynomax super turbo mufflers. Don't get Flowmasters unless you want to go deaf and let the police know everytime you put your foot in it.

The two I like are the Magnum Force and the Dynomax, both have a note and add some performance.

Series 50 Slowmaster's are pretty quiet compared to the 40.I have one on my pu.

I used the dynomax super turbos @2-1/2 inches, offset in center out, full tail pipes. My ‘03-5.9 was basically stock except rpm intake, 600 carb, headers into a true dual exhaust to the bumper.

I found the sound quietly muscular at cruise, noticeable when I’m on it, quite at idle. It seems to suite the sedate build of a true Mello hot rod cruiser. That’s what I wanted. Something to drive anywhere at anytime for any distance while enjoying music.

I tried several mufflers. (There inexpensive enough) I also tried;

Hooker Asro Chambers. Louder and states muscle car.

Summit turbo mufflers tha came with the exhaust kit. Louder still yet. Slightly annoyed at the sound level for strictly a cruiser, powerful sound.

Dyno Max VT My ears said “OUCH!” LOUD!!!!

How much increase are you looking for?

A good exhaust system will add some power, there are a lot of variables to how much power. Maybe a rule of thumb, I maybe wrong, is 5 to 10

FWIW, I still like the engine masters muffler shoot out video on the lowly 345 hp engine.

Sound is such a personal taste

First video: Walker quiet flows behind a mild 318-340cam-manifolds-2-1/4" duals and h pipe.

Second video: Same Walker quiet flows behind my 5.9, dougs headers, 2-1/2" through x-pipe. 2-1/4" walkers and tailpipes. (sorry only have video of it idling so far).

Dynomax Ultra Flows, Borla, Jones Maxflow, or Magnaflows are going to flow well. I've used Magnaflows, Maxflows and Ultra flows and the Ultra and Max were on the quieter end. They all get loud when you get on it but cruise pretty quietly.

Its going to come down to your taste and what you can put up with, what is loud to some folks is too quiet to others. Listening to videos typically doesn't capture the true sound very well let alone the rpm range and inside the cabin. Tube size and routing layout can alter sound as well. Best bet is hit some car shows and listen or get with a local shop who will work with you on swapping out the mufflers until you get what you want.

I've few different setups on various magnums right now.

'71 Scamp, 5.9 magnum: Hooker headers, 2 1/4 pipes all the way to the rear bumper and Thrush welded mufflers. Not much different than the Flowmasters that were on it previously(had one of them come loose inside and start rattling, so tried the Thrush), good sound at idle, and at WOT. Cruising noise is tolerable for me.

'98 Dakota 5.2 magnum: stock exhaust until right before the cat. Cat removed and then ran to a single in - dual out Flowmaster knockoff (that I got at the Nats last year for cheap), then had it exit right behind the rear wheels. Love the sound all around. Been on a couple 200 mile round trips in it since and the noise level is also tolerable.

'99 Dakota R/T 5.9 magnum: Mopar mid-length headers, no cats, and 2 1/5 mandrel bent pipes that exit at the corners just under the rear bumper. Have a single Magnaflow on it that is a dual in - dual out and has a crossover inside it. Definitely a different sound at idle then the other vehicles I have, but it has grown on me. Sounds good at part throttle, but I'm not quite as fond of it at WOT. Again, cruising sound level is tolerable for me.

All these will definitely be louder than any "turbo" style muffler, but everyone has a different opinion on what is too loud.

True that! So subjective it’s crazy.

I hate the sound of glass packs but that’s me. A few buddies L-O-V-E them to death. I cringe, they smile.
Whatever!

I love a deep sounding turbo muffler and the only Chambered muffler I really like is the Hooker Aero Chamber.
And all of my glass pack buddies all go, “Ehhh, so-so...”

Dynomaxers 3-pass. 3"in/3"out, 10.9Scr-LA360, 400ish hp, 68 Barracuda.
Volume depends on foot stomp and rpm:
Quiet and mellow at idle.......................Screaming banshee at 7000
No drone at 2250 cruise rpm, easy on the ears in traffic,
Heck there's more windnoise at 65 in an A-body than exhaust noise. And if,like me, you have to cruise with the windows down for A/C, then the musical tones of the mufflers will for sure be on mute. On long trips,I wear ear plugs...... to mute the wind noise, not the muffs. I have no tunes, not now,not since 1975,not ever again..
They say 3" tailpipes are loud...... maybe........if you stick 'em into your ears, lol.
But the sound from 5500 to 7000 at WOT is all worth it. I wouldn't trade em for any others.
My exhaust is all TTI, with factory turn-downs ending right at the back bumper, just far enough inside that you can't snag your shins on them. They come out right alongside the offset springs.
It came with an H pipe, but I had to cut it out to make room for the GVOD. Not sorry about that. At all.

Back in 71/72, in highschool, one of my fellow students showed up with an Orange 71 Demon. It had shorty glasspacks on it, like Purple Hornies or something similar;but not Thrush and not CherryBombs.
Man that car made the most awesomest rifle-shot sounds, when he backed off at high-rpm. And going up was pretty good too. But yeah, that would be too loud for me today. At that time, I was 19, so totally anti-authority,lol, and dug it for the sound.....and for the volume, hah.

On my 97 Ram 5.2, Yesterday I removed the 2-1/2 magnaflo duals and put on a stock single exhaust. It was rediculusly loud for a nearly daily driver. I constantly woke our baby when leaving for work at 530am.
87 ramcharger with stock 318, i run 2-1/4 duals through manifolds, H-pipe and summit turbo muffs and sounds really good with a little rumble to it, and no baby waking when going to work.
Like said earlier, sound is subjective to each application and person. Find a car that has the sound you are looking for and ask them what they are running for exhaust.

Robert ,BANK THANK YOU ! Have the " turbo muffins " that came with Summit kit ( LOUD ) was looking at a old school set of CVX for Cherry Bomb's equivalent.

I did like the Summit mufflers. Just not for what I was trying to do with the B body.
An old friend has them on an otherwise stock ‘79-ish Ram Charger and they sound ridiculously awesome.

I have Jeg's 2 chamber mufflers on right now with a custom X-pipe and turn downs. I have been wanting to try Spintechs the Sportman 3000 or 3000XL depending on fitment. Also, I want to go out the back instead of the turn downs.

I have Classic Chambered PowerSticks on my Duster now but those are on the loud side and have a very raspy, open sound... I'm young so my go-to "quiet" muffler is the Dynomax UltraFlo, I think the Super Turbos are too quiet lol. My cousin's 440 '72 Polara had UltraFlos and they were perfect, I also ran them on my old 1988 Fifth Avenue with a 318 and have one on the Jeep in my sig. All drivers with lots of street use and none of them had any drone. They're also good quality, the muffler on my Jeep is about 3-4 years old (lots of winter driving and we have a form of road salt here) and it only has slight surface rust along the welds.

What case size Super Turbos. ,did you use Rob...? Running the Imco turbo mufflers ,from the mandrel bent 2.5" Jegs kit .. They are louder ,than the two chamber Flows ,I had.
