Your First Car

-
1st car- Bought in '74 with lawnmowing money. 66 valiant signet 2drhdt auto on floor with console and buckets, Restored interior to original. My brother totalled his '72 duster hypo 340 so I took the radiator, all the under carraige, k-member, front power disk brakes, the 340, 727 tranny, and 3.23 posi rear, power steering, and air shocks all jacked up in the rear. I coudn't keep from burning the tires so I cut a 3" hole in rear bumber brackets and welded in a 300# solid steel bar 5' long in front of the rear bumper, totally hidden from view to add weight as far back as possible. I machine 8 15" stock wheels. The quick drop side as long as I could on 4, and standard drop as long as I could on the other four, Then welded them together to make 2 11" wide wheels and 2 8" wide wheels. Machined the center out so I had 4 rings. Took four more wheels and machines the wheel off the center and the welded the centers on the four rings using the right offset on the front and rear so the G-60 15s on the front and the M-50 15s on the rear would fit under the car. Put a shift kit in tranny. Painted the outside dark metalic blue with silver metalic Starsky & Hutch stripe. This car was awesome unbeaten in the 1/4 mile, I was 14 yrs old. I helps to grow up in a machine shop. I waxed a 428 super cobrajet Mach I, a 383 4 speed roadrunner a 68 camero with 5 grand in the engine alone and a 67 SS396 Chevelle. I was coolest kid in school. I have driven nothing but mopar my whole life. Now I am 51 with a 2009 Dodge Bighorn Quadcab 5.7 hemi my latest Dodge. Can anybody top that as a FIRST CAR? P.S. It would pick the left front tire about 4" at launch as told to me by my friends, and I swear it felt like it did again when it hit 2nd gear. I could feel the body twist and the front get real light. The sq. speedo read 120 the needle would go all the way back to 10mph when the front got to light to go any faster. The tach would read 6400 and climbing but I didn't have the guts or I had enough sense to know when to quit. It set down about 30' of rubber at launch and about 10' when it hit second. 2 more things I put a crane fireball 292 solid camshaft, 292 dur in. and ex. with a .509 lift. I also installed a holley 750 dbl. pumper and 2 1/4" headman headers with dual 2 1/2" exh. pipes. I paid $500 for the car and aboutt $1000 in parts and tires and a WHOLE LOT OF WORK, BUT IT WAS WORTH IT. I LOVE THAT CAR!!!! I was 14 at the time and mowed yards and hauled hay in the summer and scooped snow in the winter. And I worked for my dad in the evening in the machine shop. P.S.S. the 300# steel bar and wheels was his Idea. Low budgit and go fast.

My first car I got when I was 19 and it was about 1.5 years old. 1967 Dodge Dart GTS, red, black interior, buckets, 4 speed, 3.23 limited slip and the original owner got if from Grandspalding Dodge. I still have it and the build sheet plus documentation from Dodge historical. See link at left for more photos.

Got it when I was 15. Looked just like that but with worn out springs and stock wheels and orginial tires. Ten years later and it's still mine.
