Got your attention? Good, read on, because they are among us here on FABO.

Within the last month I’ve encountered two individuals who either admitted to owning and considering swapping VINs or have already swapped VINs. The later actually has advertised his car for sale; thankfully it did not sell on FABO. Both are still active here, so beware. And to the guy that has actually swapped VINs, I’m watching and waiting for you to sell here or on EBay. You know who you are. If you can prove you are legal, then I will apologize here in public. If you harass me with PMs, I’ll call you out here in this public forum.

I know all of you are going to ask me who these perpetrators are, if you want to know, click on my Avatar (left hand side) and view my profile. Click “statistics” and then click “find all posts by Demon 408”. You only need to go back to March 19, 2011 to see both.

I started this thread because I’m really sick of what is happening to our hobby and I wanted to educate the unknowing and warn those who are buying, or selling, cars. One particular issue that pisses me off is FABO members buying a “Duster” and turning it into a “Demon”. I know some of you will disagree (flame on), but if you want a Demon, buy one. And if you are swapping VINs and titles to make the Duster a Demon…may you rot in hell. Okay, I know, you “like Demons” better than you do Dusters and there are more Duster out there, so why not? Well, maybe you are honest and you will represent that 71 Demon as what it really is, a 71 Duster. But, then you sell the car and the next owner is not as honest. Buyer and seller beware.

You may disagree with the following definitions but you need to be familiar with them:

VIN: A VIN is a Vehicle Identification Number; every A-Body has one. The early VINs up through 1965 had 10 digits in the number. The 1966 and up have 13 digits in the number. Basically, VIN tells you the model, engine, if it is a Dodge or Plymouth and what plant assembled the car. The key to an original car is the VIN.

Original “numbers matching” car: An original numbers matching car is a car that has all its correct parts, to include motor, transmission, and interior. The motor, transmission and all other parts match the VIN serial number and paint is original color. The original VIN, data plate and title remain with the car. If the car was advertised for sale the seller would list it as original “numbers matching” car.

Original “numbers correct” car: An original numbers correct car is a car that has all its correct parts, to include motor, transmission, and interior. Motor and transmission may not match the VIN but they have the correct date code. Paint may be a different color, but is a color that was available for that year make and model. The original VIN, data plate and title remain with the car. If the car was advertised for sale the seller would list it as original “numbers correct” car with a color change.

Clones: A clone car is a car that looks like a muscle car but wasn’t built as one. For example, A 71 slant-6 Demon with a 340 in it and all of the exterior 340 badges would be a clone of a 71 Demon 340. But there would be no attempt to pass it off as a Demon 340. The original VIN, data plate and title that reflected the slant 6 would remain with the car. If the car was advertised for sale the seller would make it clear it was a clone.

Resto-mod: This car uses newer parts to increase performance and safety, but may or may not attempt to look like a clone (see above). The original VIN, data plate and title reflecting the original car would remain with the car. If the car was advertised for sale the seller would make it clear it was a resto-mod.

Counterfeits: A counterfeit car is similar to a clone (or even resto-mod). However, an attempt has been made to hide this fact and owner tries to pass it off, or advertises it for sale, as an original. WARNING: Changing or duplicating the VIN on your car is a federal offense. Federal offense means you will be someone’s *****. If you have a VIN then it must have a legal history…period.

To the honest FABO members out there, no harm no foul.

You have to change more than a tag to "redefine" a car though. Savy buyers know what to look for. And I guess that's what con's prey on is the buyers that don't. I went to buy a 63 Fury 440 car, NOTHING jived and the owner was a known sheister form meeting him months previous. He was a bit suprized when I showed up, but prob not when I didn't buy his scam or his car.

I agree with you but for this. My car my way. I will do what ever I want with my car. Never would reVin it though.
 
And I beleive you are an honest man. Please be careful to who you sell it to though, if you do sell it.


O ya for sure. The vin and title will still say 75 Duster and I am not changing out the tail lights. So they will still be 75 Duster. Ya I am a little off:hippy2::toothy7: LOL
 
I'm confused......... Putting sweptline trucks together, I have swapped cabs because of rust in the body mounts, the VIN went with the cab, the truck became the new VIN on the new cab, is this somehow wrong? Just like my beautiful 70 Dodge actually is a 69 with a 70 Front end and trim?? Not sure how building vehicles out of parts is somehow wrong, am I missing something?

Here's my opinon. Is legal in your state to do what you did? If it is, and you let any buyer know, then no problem.
 
Uh, yes, it is legal to swap a cab, but it is ILLEGAL to remove the VIN, so what I did was legal. AND everyone knows my 69 has a 70 front clip because some drunk druggie hit and runned it and I didn't have any 69 parts.. No secrets there.

But after re-reading, I see your point, taking my VINNED 72 Duster, changing a few pieces and the VIN tag to a demon, and calling/selling it as a DEMON, is illegal.........
 
I've been contemplating adding the front and rear clips from a '77 / '78 Monaco or Gran Fury to my '72 Coronet , as those models are easily recognised ; no one knows WTF a '72 Coronet is !
The other ***** would be the '75 - '78 dash ... not sure if I'd be able to interface the '75 & up dashpad and instrument clustre with my 72's dash shell ; I plan to keep it registered as a '72 so I can avoid smog checks , but have the look of the later model(s) :)

NO v.i.n. swapping involved , as in this case , I'd screw myself right-into the talons of the smog check nazi's !
 
I think what Demon 408 is gettin at is anybody that's actually tried to pass somethin off as original vin correct and numbers matchin when it ain't is a lyin low down scum suckin sumbitch. Is that about right? I couldn't agree more with every word btw.

Yes, you are correct. This isn't about swapping front clips between cars. It's about trying to mis-represent, or worse.
 
I agree with Demon 408. Altering cars in this hobby is what we do. Its what makes us the same but different. We all have our own idea of what looks good From origenal to hot rod. Before some of you run off to find your old parts and put them back on. Its ok to change ,to alter but not to deceive. You don't change vins thats illegal in any state . If you have a Duster and want to make a Demon , knock your socks off, just don't screw with the vin. If you sell state that it has been changed be up front and honest.
 
many states have "Composite Car" laws requiring full disclosure and inspection / recertification by the state which them generally issues a new vin and title showing it as a "Composite Car" of course the fraud starts with a misrepresentation at resale
 
good thinkin!!! ive had a few ex customers ask me to perform some moving of small pics of mtal from certain unmentioned place to another vehichle thus they are ex customers
You are correct sir, and I know where those "items" are at on each year a-body. However I didn't feel it necessary to educate the crooks, let them learn on their own.
 
I totally agree with the vin tampering misrepresenting crapola has to stop.

ok well i have a story here i dont know the laws 1st off but well my uncle crashed a 66 dart2 door post it was tolded in the crash and he sold what was left and some how theres a 66 dart gt thats got its vin plate with it now i did own it to but never had a title for it sold it for parts years b4 now its a post how would that work and whats the odds that 2 of the cars we sold (for parts ) years apart would be in the same hand now the crashed one the guy bot it parted it out where it was and asked if we could crush it and we did he got the vin and some other parts and my uncle signed the title so ya
 
Don't even get me started about vin swapping,or rebodying. Its a practice thats becoming more and more common out here too. I have even seen a vin, fender tag, and buildsheet for an FC7 1970 340 Swinger for sale with a 6 cyl. project car. The guy is a wealthy, big time Mopar collector to boot ! If theres nothing wrong with it, then why the F--K didn't he resto it ! If you've got a vin for a pedigree Mopar, then leave it where it belongs. HANGING ON A NAIL IN YOUR SHOP. Jason Cunningham.
